It's based on highly sophisticated software which takes into account every possible factor about every flight. On one day, the "magic number" could be 2 and the same flight the next day could be 10. Because CO can always UG at the gate, there is a positive incentive to withold seats until the gate if there is any chance they can be sold (or used for misconnection paid F pax).
I am thrown off by the I dont have a choice comment. Ofcourse I can decide when to check in thereby putting myself on BUG list instead of EUA?? |
No, there's no choice. EUA will continue to run until the flight goes to gate control. Whether you check in or not has no bearing on whether this process will upgrade you.
The upgrade standby-list is only processed by the gate agent, usually sometime between when the flight has closed for check-in and the T-10 minute boarding cutoff. You will necessarily have checked in by this time, so you will be on this list for upgrade. How exactly you get the upgrade is out of your control; hence, no choice. But since your priority on the upgrade standby list factors in check-in time (as a tie-breaker after elite status and fare class), it's always in your best interest to check in as early as possible. There is no drawback on CO. |

Couldn't agree more, though I also do not obsess about it since time added to the list is the 3rd tiebreaker. |

Thanks. So if I am reading this correctly, I will be under EUA and also on the BUG list when I check in at say T-24 and the upgrade will be processed by EUA alone. Only when the flight has gone to gate control will I and everyone else be booted from EUA and the GA's will start to process BUGs?
