Upgrade question
 

Hello all:

I am a newbie and looking forward to learning a lot by reading these forums. I'm planning to book a flight from EWR to either FRA or MUC, traveling in September. I'd like to upgrade using miles. While I can get an upgrade for the outbound, I cannot upgrade the inbound for either of the two dates I can travel (mid-September, Sunday or Monday). At first I thought it might be too early, and the seats were not released, but I find that upgrades are available the day after I need to return (Tuesday). A quick check of available seats in Business First shows that hardly any seats have been booked for the dates I want. (FRA-EWR, for instance, only one seat out of 50 is currently booked).

Is this a day-of-the-week issue? How likely is it that upgrades will become available on a Sunday or Monday?

Do you have status on Continental or one of the Star Alliance partners?

What rate is your ticket? If it's full price economy it will be easier to upgrade. Did you try miles+$?

I have CO silver status. The upgrade on the return ticket is not available at any economy fare, including Q and Y. (The Y fare is actually more than Business Z fare). Can't even use miles +$

IN general, Monday is an easier upgrade to get than sunday on FRA-EWR.
Go ahead and waitlist for the upgrade. yOU will clear eventually. They will deduct the $$$ and miles as soon as you waitlist. Your reservation will say "this segment is wait listed" (in red color) if the wait list was done correctly.
