combining UA and CO flights

I know this topic has been discussed to death, but I am still unclear. I know the two frequent flyer programs will be merged and my pres platinum status will end on Jan 31, 2012. Here is my question. I have to fly to Kuala Lumpur. I want to fly on Continental, but it will require spending the night in Tokyo or Hong Kong causing my trip to be longer than I would like. Flying UA will be more convienent. Will my travel on UA and CO be combined at the end of this year? I am shooting for all of the SWU and benefits I can get (and dare I say it...GS). However is it better just to keep it on CO and have my status be determined that way? I need a Flyertalk guru to give me some good advice.

Yes, for EQM, RDM and GS qualification purposes.

So, does that mean I shouldn't worry about which airline to fly on, just book whichever is more convienent?
