Double miles announced for IAH-AKL (not double EQMS though)

Beginning Nov. 16, 2011, Continental will begin new service between Houston (IAH) and Auckland, New Zealand (AKL). Earn double miles on all IAH - AKL flights from Nov. 16, 2011 through Feb. 15, 2012. Registration is required.

Did we decide that a 767-200ER could fly this, or is it going to require a 787? It's good to see that they are moving forward on this route though.

This route is 14,840 miles round trip.

You can't even book that far out.

I know they want their advance bookings, but aren't they jumping the gun a bit here?

Can the 762 even make it that far?

767-200 - Max cruising speed 914km/h (493kt), economical cruising speed 854km/h (461kt). Range of basic aircraft with JT9Ds 5855km (3160nm), medium range version with CF6s 7135km (3850nm). 767-200ER - Speeds same. Range with PW4056s 12,269km (6625nm), with CF6s 12,352km (6670nm).
From Boeing...

IAH-AKL is 6,444nm so a 762ER would be pushing it!

Don't forget that at ETOPS 180 there is actually a "hitch" in the flight path for IAH-AKL that makes it longer than the straight great circle distance. I guess if they weight restrict it or something it might get extra range but that's a tough call to make.

That looks about right, so if UA is launching this...it would have to be on T7 Equipment.

What about a technical stop at HNL to refuel until the 787 comes online?

Would that be double miles on top of the elite bonus?
That is, would a one-way earn 7415 base and EQM miles, 7415 RDM through the promotion, and up to 7415 RDM based on elite status?
Earning double elite miles (for a total of up to 30k RDM for a one-way flight) would be nice...
