Checking Bags
This is my first post but I'm been a lurker for some time. I've always appreciated all the great information I've found here! Hopefully somebody can answer my question.
I am flying from Madrid to Newark via Frankfurt. The flight to Frankfurt is operated by Lufthansa while the flight from Frankfurt to Newark is on Continental. I'm in BF on the CO portion but Y on the LH portion. I will be checking two bags and will also have a carry-on. Since I bought both segments on CO, will I be able to check both bags for free on the Lufthansa flight? Thanks! |

You will be governed by the baggage check policy of the originating carrier (in this case Lufthansa).

Just make sure the LH agents know you are checking in for a long-haul flight and you'll get 2 pieces per their policies noted here.

I'm guessing that the OP had their tickets issued prior to 15 Nov 2010 so it would be 2 pieces. I'm also willing to wager that, by checking in at the Biz counter as they are traveling on a Biz ticket the OP would be afforded the 2 bags anyways, even if the first segment is in Y.
Probably have to go to the M+M forum to get confirmation on that, however. |
Thanks for the responses. I bought my ticket over the summer so hopefully I'll be afforded two checked bags. Do I have to check-in at the LH counter? Or can I just go to CO? Can I check in for both flights at one counter? My outbound flight was last month and the intra-Europe connection was on Swiss Air Lines. In Newark, I went to the CO counter and received boarding passes for both flights. Are the rules different because the originating carrier is not CO?

You always check in with the operator of the first flight. In this case that's LH as they're the carrier you're flying on to FRA. They should provide you the BP for the onward connection as well.

I have a question to tag on to make sure I read it correctly.
I am flying IAH to LAX in CO F and from LAX to BKK on TG in J. Since I originate on CO on domestic F, I only get to check 2 pieces of luggage at a max of 50# each, even though I am connecting on an international business flight on a * partner, correct? I am not a * G member, nor military, nor did I purchase the ticket before Oct of 09. |
Correct, and even international Biz only gets 2x50#, I believe. It is only BF, *G or military that gets the 3x70#.

Since we're talking CO through baggage queries may as well pop mine here too and save a new thread.
Flying LHR-EWR-SDF on Friday. Decided to go on the early LHR-EWR and the late EWR-SDF to give me 6 hours or so to head into NYC for a spot of Christmas shopping. 1) Will I be able to check my main bag onto the EWR-SDF immediately upon arrival in EWR (i.e. 9 hours before the flight). 2) If I do lots of shopping will I be able to check a second bag later on re-arrival at EWR? Star gold so no need to worry about fees for first 2 bags. Thanks in advance :) |
Wirelessly posted (BlackBerry9630/5.0.0.591 Profile/MIDP-2.1 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/105)
If you have the folks in LHR tag the bags all the way through to SDF then you would just drop them off at the re-check when you come through and it should be no problem. Yes, you can add an extra bag staring just in EWR. And as a *A you get 3x70# to work with. |
Many thanks! Now just left to decide what to do on my whistlestop tour of NYC

So just to tack one more question on to this thread...
If I have to show up at FRA really early for a flight because I’m taking the train and am in an awkward location for getting to FRA, I can’t check my bags until T-4hrs? In two weeks I’m on FRA-IAH in BF but unfortunately may have to show up at 9am for the 1:50pm flight. Do I really have to sit around the check-in area until 9:50 to drop off my bag? |
