When the PPlat program was announced there was an article in the WSJ which quoted CO as indicating that they were targeting a number of 20,000 PPlat.

The $30K spend was likely based on getting the 20K number.

And on UA side, they don't even devulge the 30K figure...

They bumped my friend from Toyota who flies mostly paid C class on business, and the guy flies a lot...from GS to 1K. He wrote them, UA still said " sorry "

Can you find a copy of that article anywhere? I was looking for it this morning and I do not see it.

I don't have access to WSJ database. Just remember reading it - and that is a number that would be of interest that I would have wanted to retain.

Do you know the date when PPlat was announced? Maybe it is the same time period as CO Insider's post.

gotta say that this is a bit hard to get. I have 115,000+ EQM this year and only $19,000 in spend. Have a full slate of travel booked through the end of the year including two trips to Europe and might still not get to it.

I'm a bit confused as to why this is a problem? Its SUPPOSED to be hard to get. Its not too hard to fly 75k, but GS and PP are targeted to people who spend megabucks and the airlines design the cutoff to keep it meaningfully exclusive. Maybe UA has realized that GS has gotten a bit too pedestrian.

I have about 130K eqm and still only about $6k in spending. Granted, a bit of my miles were on other *A carriers (UA, US, LH & AC).

And those that influence megabucks, or those labeled influencers. Posts over in UA about GS members with only a few flights a years.

You still have to earn base Platinum (75,000 EQM a year) and then spend the $30K this year to qualify.

If you spent $40K but only earned 60,000 EQM you would not get PPlat status. However, most people achieving PPlat status are buying full J BF tickets which also get a 50% EQM bonus - so flying 50K with 50% bonus would give you 75K EQM. I suppose it is possible to spend $30K and not earn 75K EQM - but this would likely be an exception situation.

One (possible) way of doing this would be cle-ewr, in paid first, a bunch of times. ~$1100 r/t for Z, ~$1800 r/t for F, 1500 EQM r/t. LAS/LAX is a similar route, I'm sure there are others that could be found.

It takes 30 $1000 trips to hit PP. Remember that they use only the fare, not taxes and fees so you could be spending $1100 per trip. So, unless you are flying lots of full Y or F, you will not make this easily. This is meant for the business traveler who does lots of first class flights on the company dime in an international setting.

I fly a lot, and a good chunk is in B or Y fares. I don't think I have even hit $15000 in spending at this time. I do not do lots of international first. I'll live with it.
