If some schedule complication occurs to your first or second leg of the itinerary and you can argue the case, the airline will probably be merciful and preserve your return flight.
Good luck with any checked-in luggage.
I have never had any problems with it. Of course I contact the airline.
Several times, I have done SJC-ORD-MKE on UA. SJC-ORD was so late that ORD-MKE was impossible to catch until the following day. UA let me catch ground transportation to MKE. Return flight was unaffected; and I have never been reprimanded or threatened.
Again, if the case is arguable, there is no problem.

Right. But that's UA. In my experience, CO is far more rigid on this point, simply because they want you to spend more money.
