When I was in college before I worked for CO, I paid $500 for IAH-BOI roundtrip. There was a stop in SLC both ways and the SLC-BOI-SLC legs were operated by DL. CO later offered IAH-BOI direct but it was short lived. That was the most I paid for a ticket on CO. The cheapest was IAH-DEN roundtrip for spring break one year.. that was $175. I also used miles once and only paid a $10 surcharge.

It's worth noting that you can now generally buy an actual ticket for less than the cost of a buddy pass roundtrip internationally.

That may be the case on CO, but it's not always the case on other carriers.

As for the OP's query, when I was doing more extensive CO flying (back in the 50% EQM days), my expensive tickets always went to NW. The upgrades were more reliable on NW, and it was 100% EQM regardless on the higher fares. CO's policies of that era simply ensured I flew CO on the cheap stuff, and flew NW on the expensive stuff.

CO: $9,019.60 for an international flight purchased at 5:33 PM for an 8:45 PM flight with a one day return. Something like 62 per mile. I absolutely, positively had to be there, though.

I routinely paid $1450 for EWR-MSP return and sat in the back in late 2000 and early 2001. Some weeks it was $1550 if I didn't remember to call a day in advance for the tickets. It was on that project that my PM introduced me to FlyerTalk and some crazy bonuses that were going on at the time. We ended up with triple HH points (Embassy Suites that no longer exists in MSP) and some crazy GG codes that net 3-5x earning on travel and promos for Europe as well. The day I discovered that I could get 2 nights in DUB and the regular EWR-MSP trip for less than just going to MSP was a beautiful thing. My buddy did a straight turn to MXP a couple weeks later to max out the Europe bonuses (it was tiered at 5/10/25K or something like that) and I actually didn't do it for some reason. I guess I wasn't crazy enough then. Now I make runs like that all the time and he's mostly grounded.

Because my segments were so short I didn't even make elite in 2000; 2001 was my first year with status.
