YN Upgrade

I want to book a ticket EWR-EDI-EWR in YN for 100,000 miles. It's in the near future and there aren't any saver awards available in either class. Is this ticket upgradable with miles/cash or a combination of both? Is there a way to wait list for a saver BF award?
I did a little digging here about how CO handles wait lists and it seemed to me you had to be booked into saver economy to wait list for a saver BF award, but hopefully I am wrong.

Thanks for the guidance!

You cannot upgrade a YN ticket with cash+miles, but there is a Plan B that requires an X or XN fare class:

You beat me to it, FT Lurker!

But he's right. You need to call CO, book the SaverPass BF reward, but have the agent seat you in Economy. You'll then be put on the waitlist for a BF seat. See the 'Plan B' post for more info!

Thank you! I read the post linked with the reference to the agent manual in case things go wrong. I have one more question. I want to sit in economy with the YN award (50,000 one way) on the way out to sit with my SO. I am traveling by myself and I want to standby (seat in economy until the 24hr mark or at airport clearance) for a BF saver award (52,500 one way) on the way back. There is no saver pass award available in economy only easy pass. Can I do this?

I'm surprised this wasn't addressed in the Plan B post, but no, you have to be confirmed in Standard Coach in order to stand by or waitlist for Standard BusinessFirst. You can be confirmed in coach on a different day/flight I believe, but you'd have to be prepared to fly as confirmed if the waitlist doesn't clear. And FYI, the waitlist can clear at any time.

CO just doesn't use the word standard anymore they call it "saverpass". That was what was confusing me. I now understand how it works and it looks like if I push my return out one day there is "saverpass" economy space so I should be able to waitlist for "saverpass" BF. At least that's how I understand it. I will report my success/failure on the other related thread which is recent as of 6/7/10.
