Connection Time in IAH

I have a flight at the end of the month from YYZ to LAS via IAH with 45 minutes between flights.

Should I be worried about not making the connecting flight?

On my way back I'm going LAS-EWR-YYZ again with about 45 minutes between flights.

It's been a while since I've had connections that seem so short. I just want to make sure that I know if I need to rush from gate to gate.

Thanks!

I assume you'll clear US Customs in Toronto before departing, so 45 minutes in Houston is tight but doable, assuming the flight is on time.

If you're on a regional jet for the YYZ-IAH leg, you'll probably arrive at Terminal B and have to take the train to C or E. You won't have to sprint, but you can't waste any time either.

A bit of a rush but still doable assuming things are on-time. You'll pre-clear in YYZ so it is just a domestic connection when you get to IAH. Perhaps made a bit worse by the fact that you'll be coming in on an ERJ and have to switch to mainline (and vv on the return) but possible.

At IAH, I've gone through customs including a long agriculture inspection (lucky me) and gone from E to B with a 45 minute connection time and had plenty of time to spare. I'd worry about the EWR connection. My son had a two hour connection on a CLE-EWR-CDG flight and made it only because the CDG flight was a bit late in loading. (Two hours is my personal minimum connect time in EWR).

Thanks to everyone for the advise.

I will be clearing US customs in YYZ. Now I know I won't have much time to waste. I guess I should verify what planes I'm on and what terminals I'll be landing/flying from.

It does make a big difference in EWR. If the flight is an ERJ, it will be over in Term A, but if it's a Colgan Q400, it will be in C (and thus easier connection).

CDG-IAH-BTR Details

My daughter is traveling Paris to Baton Rouge via IAH on a Saturday. The connection time Saturday afternoon is a little over 2 hours. I assume this will be fine... if not, somebody please say so. There is no earlier connection on a Saturday, so no temptation to try to cut it closer.

I would like to be able to tell her what to expect at IAH and have a few questions. She is travelling with a US passport.

1. Will she have to collect her bags, clear customs, and then recheck them to Baton Rouge?

2. Is there a separate baggage claim area "inside of secuity"? I assume there must be.

3. Will there ever be a need to go outside security and have to clear again?

4. Any other advice?

Thanks in advance for the help!

If it is all on one ticket, then her bags will be tagged through to BTR. however, she will collect bags at IAH, clear customs, and handover the bags to the CO folks right outside customs (there is an area specifically for through-checked bags right outside customs at IAH).

2. Is there a separate baggage claim area "inside of secuity"? I assume there must be.
Dont know what you mean here? The bag claim for her will be just after immigration, but before customs check.

3. Will there ever be a need to go outside security and have to clear again?
Yes, she will be outside security as soon as she comes out of customs.
However, as soon as she hands her bag over for the BTR flight, there is a security area just past the bag place. THis is only for hte folks who are connecting from International flights. This is really a nice thing at IAH. She wont be mixed with all the other pax in this security line.

4. Any other advice?
Two hours should be good enough with a US passport.

With 2 hours, she should be just fine. I do this quite often with my connection being on COEx to LFT. The IAH-BTR flights are operated by COEx as well. Just make sure she knows she needs to proceed to Term B for her connecting flight to BTR via the TerminaLink above ground people mover.

1. She'll collect her bags before going through immigration and then drop them just after clearing customs (as mentioned there's a spot for that just after you pass through US Customs).

2. See answer to 1

3. Once you pass through immigration and customs you are no longer in the secure area and will need to pass back through security again. As mentioned there is a security gate just after customs to facilitate this.

4. With two hours she should have more than enough time. It can take about 30 minutes to clear customs and immigration on a busy day.
