IAH – NRT Upgrade Availability Question

So I have to head to NRT at the end of July. BF is wide open on most flights I need, but I just called and there is no upgrade availability.

Does anyone know how CO has made upgrades available in the past on these flights?

I know I can waitlist, but I don’t like the gamble, when I could have another route on another airline for an upgrade.
Any past history on NRT upgrades would be great.

I fly this route frequently and am Plat, like you.

Typically the upgrades clear 2-4 days prior to departure. Saturday departures from US typically clear the last. Mid-weeks usually clear 4+ days in advance.

I flew IAH-NRT 5-13-10 and was bumped up to B because Y was oversold.

Both times I have flown this as a gold I was upgraded a few 3-4 days before the flight. My outbound flight might have been only 2 days as it was a Sunday flight, but have had relatively good success on this route using miles + copay.

So basically I should not expect an upgrade until less than a week out.
Now the debate is taking the gamble or be guaranteed on ANA from SFO.

If you can confirm on NH in advance I'd probably go that route. Confirmed is better than standby and the couple extra hours with the connection probably won't suck too badly.
