When do you need to put in your upgrade request by, and when do you find out if you cleared?
And if you didn't clear, all the miles/money is returned? |

A courtesy upgrade from Y to J when Y is oversold and there are open J seats - it is suppose to be given out by Elite status and fare class, but agents don't often follow those guidelines.
It's a complete crapshoot and you can fly 50 times without ever seeing an OP-UP, so don't count on it at all. We got to the gate in EWR, and I stopped one of the GAs who happened to be walking past us to ask a question. He looked down at my boarding pass and confirmed that I was in row 17. When I said yes, he asked me to follow him to the podium, where he proceeded to hand me my new BF boarding pass. At that point, I figured my daughter's graduation present just got much better. My wife walked up behind me and he asked if she was with me, and proceeded to hand her a new BF BP as well. I thanked him very much, smiled and jokingly said "you know I'm going to get screwed in this deal". When he asked why, and I told him this was my daughter's graduation trip and that of course I was going to let my girls ride up front, he looked down at the manifest and confirmed that she would have been next to get upgraded and apologized. I laughed, shook his hand and said, "are you kidding?...this is outstanding...thank you so much!" Ten minutes later, he walked over and handed me my daughter's BF BP as well. I looked at my girls in disbelief and told them this almost never happens, especially when two of our tickets were standard reward tickets. I guess miracles do happen. I have posted several times in the past that I buy cheap tickets and hope for the best with upgrades, and therefore never complain when I don't get one. I don't think I'll be questioning CO's upgrade policy any time soon :D (FWIW, I'm also 10/12 on eligible EUA flights so far this year, missing only EWR-BOS on this trip, and a 752 IAH-EWR). |

I just had to share that miracles like this do happen on occasion. I just returned from DEL, where I took my wife and daughter as a graduation present for my daughter who graduated from BC last week.
