Trying to understand NRT-BKK...

Newbie, here. Been reading and reading for the last few weeks - slowly starting to understand but it is a lot to digest!

New to CO after leaving DL...I notice that when booking on the CO website - you do not receive miles for the NRT-BKK leg (assuming it is bc this is a UA flight?)

If I were to book the same flight via UA - would I be able to claim the miles on my CO account?

Fly to Asia a decent amount and am wondering if I should have gone to UA instead of CO...

You get CO miles for a UA flight, but it depends on the metal. I looked it up and NRt to BKK is on TG677 which is Thai airways and earns miles(UA flight would as well, both Star Alliance)

The lowest TPAC TG fares are often in V class, which does not earn mileage, according to CO.com. You need to be very careful with some of the foreign carriers in *A. There are far more partial and zero-credit fares under *A than there were with SkyTeam and the fact that earnings follows the metal makes it a PITA when booking codeshares.

FWIW, it often isn't very expensive to buy up on TG, so it might be worth calling to see about getting credit for that leg.

CO was showing 100% miles on it however :) ticket was $1300 in coach discount class for the US-NRT portion, so it must have been a miles earning ticket on TG.

I would be very, very careful booking on the TG flight. Here are the details on a random EWR-BKK flight I looked up on ITA:

Newark, NJ to Bangkok, Thailand: 9599 miles 23 hrs 15 min

Continental Airlines Flight CO 9 on a Boeing 777 (jet) in coach class
(lunch, movie)
Departs Newark, NJ (EWR) Sun, Mar 28 11:10a 13 hrs 45 min
Arrives Tokyo, Japan (NRT) Mon, Mar 29 1:55p
1 adult in booking code E, covered by fare (A1) below

Layover in Tokyo 3 hrs 0 min
Thai Airways Flight TG677 on a Boeing 747 (jet) in coach class
(meal, movie)
Departs Tokyo, Japan (NRT) Mon, Mar 29 4:55p 6 hrs 30 min
Arrives Bangkok, Thailand (BKK) 9:25p
1 adult in booking code V, covered by fare (B1) below

Bangkok, Thailand to Newark, NJ: 9599 miles 19 hrs 55 min

Thai Airways Flight TG676 on a Boeing 747 (jet) in coach class
(meal, movie)
Departs Bangkok, Thailand (BKK) Sun, Apr 4 7:35a 6 hrs 10 min
Arrives Tokyo, Japan (NRT) 3:45p
1 adult in booking code V, covered by fare (B2) below

Layover in Tokyo 50 min
Continental Airlines Flight CO 8 on a Boeing 777 (jet) in coach class
(lunch, movie)
Departs Tokyo, Japan (NRT) Sun, Apr 4 4:35p 12 hrs 55 min
Arrives Newark, NJ (EWR) 4:30p

Total for 1 adult passenger: $1359.60
I wouldn't count on earning anything for the NRT-BKK legs on such a ticket, even if the TG flights are booked as a codeshare.

the CO search result shows it early 100% miles, take a screenshot of it and dispute it if you don't get credit. False advertising if it DOESN'T earn miles when it says 100%

Not sure you'd get any mileage on a codeshare on TG metal:

THAI (TG) flight number on ticket for THAI-operated flights
https://www.continental.com/CMS/en-U...spx?ItemId=305

UA and NH ply that route also, don't forget...

Thank you all for the responses.

When I was SkyTeam I didn't think about this a whole lot as I booked tickets so it is a new step. Southeast Asia is a common spot for me to fly in or out of so I am trying to figure out the best way to do it for the most miles but having to purchase economy.

Either MDT, EWR, or PHL

I was talking specifically about a discount ticket with a Thai-operated leg, due to the non-earning V fare. Even if booked as a code-share, a UA flight, for example, could map to a TG V fare, resulting in no miles.

Well, for miles purposes, your best bet is to book on either CO or UA metal, since they don't have non-earning fares and you receive full elite bonuses. You won't earn elite bonuses on any of the Asian carriers.

There have been bugs in that display engine - for bookings and reservations - for a few years now. Apparently CO doesn't care about fixing them.

Then they should give said credit for them, I'd sure fight for it in a case I purchased such.

In the case of the TG V fares, I think it is quite possibly a bug. For some random dates I plugged in, the V fares show as earning miles, but with a zero EQM %.
