Not necessarily reimbursement, but in that case since you didn't use all of the ticket, you could request a partial refund of the outbound.

Ah yes, this is what I was thinking.

We didn't depart till 8pm. We sat on the tarmac for 45 minutes.

Departure time is the time the door is closed. When you taxi and sit on the tarmac that is included in flight time. That is why the time was so long. CO normally has some extra time built in the flight times to compensate for delays into EWR. But in your case - you left the gate late and then sat on the tarmac. (But your scheduled connect time was still only 40 minutes).

There are no easy ways to AVP through EWR or PHL as the delays can be quite frequent and long. Next time, I would book the first flight of the day out of CHS into EWR or take UA through IAD to ensure you get there on time.

UA only flies to ORD from AVP, so IAD is not an option. (And flying through ORD is far riskier than flying through EWR, since UA cancels that flight alot.) Flying through PHL or EWR is really the best bet, because at least a one-way rental car IS an option (albeit an expensive one) if you miss the last flight of the day.

Flying US through CLT and earning CO miles is also a good alternative, because at least if you miss the connection in CLT, there is the option of flying CLT-PHL, and then connecting onto the next morning's 9:20am or 11:17AM PHL-AVP flight.
