The GA made an honest mistake, 'fessed up to it, you kept your original seat and got $100.
People make mistakes, that's just life. At least in this case you didn't get scr*wed because of someone else's error. A long time ago, I was flying MIA-SFO on AA. In those days planes still had smoking sections and I obviously did not want to sit among the smokers. AA gave me a seat assignment in smoking but told me they would try to accommodate me. At one point, the lead flight attendant comes back to me and asks me to follow him up to a seat in non-smoking. Then he must have blanked out as he walked me right up to first class. Realizing his error, he walked me back to coach, but by this time AA was boarding standbys and not only were all the seats in non-smoking filled, so was my original seat. Despite my protests, I was told I was the one who had to get off the plane ("what about the standby in my seat, for which I have a boarding pass?") When I raised a stink they threatened to call the police, so I got off. The kicker? When I got to the service center and explained what had happened, I was told I had voluntarily gotten off the plane, and that my ticket was thus void. Since I was flying home, I was forced to buy a full Y one-way ticket (which was some seriously big money). They even threatened to charge me a "storage fee" for my bag at SFO (which didn't happen, of course). Ahhhh, AA at MIA...well known for its touchy-feely customer service. You did OK ;) P.S.: As a million-mile flyer on AA, after a series of similar incidents on the airline I simply stopped flying AA. |
Unclaimed bags are stored by the baggage service people. We receive many advanced bags per flight and a few unclaimed bags. It's rare that your bag will be stolen by a thief or taken by mistake.
I think you got a great deal. $100 TC and you don't have to wait for your bags upon arrival. |
Really? You are honestly complaining about getting on your original flight and having your bags arrive early...and be compensated $100 for the inconvenience? For real? I hope you never really have any airline troubles.
CO did the exact same thing for me years ago in EWR...back when they didn't have the new concourse. I was early for my connection to BWI, but there was a wide open flight to dca an agent happily moved me over to. When I asked him afterwards to switch my bags over to the new flight he said he couldn't. So I asked to be put back on my original flight. No dice. It's oversold and I'd now be on standby. So I flew to dca and drove up to bwi and back in rush hour traffic to get my bag from the original flight. Guess I shouldve asked for $100. |

Wow, if this is true, this is among the most ridiculous stories I've ever heard. So many things went terribly wrong here. How did they allow more passengers then already boarded? How did they justify that the standby passenger had the right to your seat? I would have let the police show up and allow the airline to explain their reasons for kicking you off the plane.
I argued at length about having a confirmed seat, showed them my boarding pass, but to no avail. Anyone who flew AA in those days can tell you what it was like. I did, by the way, send a letter to Bob Crandall explaining what had happened and asking for some compensation. I'm still waiting for a response today, twenty years later. |
All is well that ends well. The bags were by the baggage claim. The GA did phone BDL, but I think what really helped was the awesome FA on the earlier flight who said "I know which bags are yours, I'll make sure they get to the baggage office and are handled appropriately".
Thanks all. |

Given Bob's heavy smoking habit I'm sure there was a small mixup with your letter....but the silver lining is it probably didn't taste that good while being smoked :D
