CO rules on pregnancy

I asked Alex about CO's rules on flying preggers to see if my wife will be good to go in December. I found out they have few restrictions:

The only real one is they won't board a woman in labor. Has anyone ever witnessed a woman in labor trying to get on a flight? If it was the last flight out of Saigon in '75, OK. I guess I can imagine a FTer being carted away screaming "I want original routing credit!"

If your wife will be in her third trimester by Dec. consult with your doctor prior to the trip.

Please also reference the "medical emergency thread" and cross-reference those of us that have helped out to make sure we're not on the same flight as your wife.

There's a report about once a year of a woman giving birth in-flight. It's not the safest place to give birth and, unless you're on the last flight leaving Saigon, there's no reason to cut it that close. You're putting your wife and the baby in needless risk should something happen.

(Congrats by the way).

In Jan. 2001 I help a woman get off the flight in full labor. Her water broken enroute to SFO and her reasoning for being on a flight so close to her due date was that she wanted to see the sun rise in Costa Rica at the turn of the Century.

She, her husband and her "supposed" doctor were all arguing in the jetway about which hospital to take her to. The nearest one wasn't Kaiser and she was protesting to the paramedics that she wanted to deliver at Kaiser. She was advised that she was going to have the baby in the jetway if she didn't hurry.

Don't give the Dirty HMO's any ideas about how to cut costs more (delivering babies at airports!)

Sarah Palin, smart women that she is, flew home eight hours from Texas eight months pregnant after her water starting breaking and she had early contractions. Trig was born 7 hours after arriving back in Alaska. I'm sure some will say this only shows how she can make smart, difficult, mavricky decisions, under great stress. I think perhaps not.

You forgot to ask the most important question...

If the baby is born in-flight, does he/she get full mileage credit for the trip?

Actually I'm headed to Saigon shortly to escort her home, as I'm not comfortable with her returning alone. She's due Feb. 1 and her doc is fine with her flying domestic through mid-December. We're definitely not looking to force a fellow pax into delivery mode. But my wife is not a fan of cold weather, and I'm sure she's going to lock herself inside until the baby comes. A few days in San Diego will do wonders for maintaining our sanity.

I'll probably be back in April or May grilling FTers about flying with little ninos. Eventually we intend to spend a lot of time in Viet Nam, but I won't risk torturing our son or a couple hundred strangers by making that his first flight. We'll start with short hops and see how it goes.

I believe that it is still Continental's official policy that pregnancy is not allowed to begin in flight.

I'd be all over it, but the wife is just glaring at me. Best not to push it.
