When do A Fares Phase Out?

I've tried a search on this, but couldn't find it. If I remember correctly, CO Insider stated that A fares would phase out and there would only be Z fares for discounted BF and such. Does anyone remember or know when that transition takes place?

I bought an "A" fare ticket earlier this year for SFO-IAH-MGA. Two weeks ago had another schedule change and the portion that changed was re-booked into "Z" with the remaining stuff without schedule change's in "A". Friends on same flights booked into "F" & "C".

A fares were always used a discounted first class domestic while Z fares where used as discount BusinessFirst. I don't remember seeing any kind of change to that.

There was a post by CO Insider suggesting that the A fares are going away. I, too, cannot find it now. I'll try again later.

Hi ijgordon, as with previous Mileathon versions, we'll typically leave out the most heavily discounted fare classes for each cabin. While A fares are higher than most Economy Class fares, they're still considered a deeply-discounted front cabin fare.

If you're buying an A class fare for travel a little further out, there's some good news. Next month, we'll be retiring the letter A from our fare class lineup, and the fares currently sold as A class will turn into Z class for travel on or after Oct. 25, 2009. This means if you buy an A class fare for Oct. 25 or later, your booking will be converted into Z class and you'll get the corresponding Z class Mileathon credit. If you're traveling Oct. 24 or before, however, you're out of luck.

For the love of the game, baby. The love of the game.

Not even close. "A" fares actually were full fare domestic first class fares not too long ago. "F" became full-fare domestic in preparation for joining the Star Alliance, and "A" became a discounted domestic first class fare bucket, although most domestic fares booking into A actually had fare basis codes beginning with "BUP".

Also, following the last fare class re-mapping, both A and Z fares were used for discounted BusinessFirst. The "A" fares were the cheapest, and did not earn the 50% class of service bonus miles. These corresponded to the old "R" fares.
