Trip Advisor - which FTers regularly post there?

This other thread I started with quotes from a couple of FTers that was posted on Trip Advisor got me thinking... how many regular FTers regularly participate on Trip Advisor?

Ive been posting there for a while now, but participate almost exclusively in the Argentina Forum.

Anybody else?

I usually post hotel reviews, but don't participate in any of the forums. One travel forum obsession is enough for me!

I can't think of my screen name for Trip Advisor off the top of my head, though.

I am also an amateur hotel reviewer. My goal is to dispel the myths set forth by the people who came before me (on TripAdvisor). :)

Gaucho100K Jan 5, 2007 12:09 pm

Intersting... Im more of a poster than a reviewer, although Ive started up a few Inside Pages. What are you views on the reviewing aspect... do you think that the reviews get more traffic than the forums?

etch5895 Jan 5, 2007 12:17 pm

I read the complaints but don't take them too much to heart unless it is something that the hotel can't fix, like location.

I've seen some horrible posts and wonder if the hotel next door is deliberately posting lies to benefit their hotels...and I've seen posts so glowing that I think sometimes the hotel manager or owner is posting them from their home computers to drum up business.

But it is very informative to get a mini preview of the property from those who have stayed there before.

Good points.... one of the things I dont get about TripAdvisor is that they dont have tools to let members communicate with one another, I dont seem to understand why they dont want this to happen. What am I missing?

ssoul Jan 5, 2007 12:46 pm

I have posted in TripAdvisor. In particular I have posted in Mendoza and Patagonia forums.

I seem to recall posting a review and being given an option to make my email address public so others could contact me. And I have seen posts with email addresses by the poster, although it's rare (most of us prefer to keep our email addresses private - why make it easier for the spammers?).

I also post hotel reviews, but the only other travel board I participate in is slowtalk, the forum of slowtravel. My business is focused in Italy and their Italy board is interesting and often very helpful.

Up until now, I have not really contributed on the website. I find it to be one of the most useful travel websites, though, and ALWAYS choose hotels based on it!^

Mi Amigo,

I post in the NY forum and the Airline forum. :o FYI, the Brooklyn forum is very quiet on TA. The thing that bothers me the most is that the same questions get asked every 2 days. No one 'searches'. ;)

itsaboutthejourney Jan 6, 2007 8:03 am

I know Randy is raking in $$$ with FlyerTalk, but he should keep an eye out on TripAdvisor because they have some great features. I find the message board threads on TA easier to navigate, much easier to search and of course the user-posted pictures of hotels is a great feature.

I think they have more traffic than FT with lots of newbies so more basic questions to sift through. The new user profile is great, because you can easily see the person's info and previous posts to see why their opinion may be different than yours, again, something FT does not easily do.

(Yes, FT is more targeted to crazy point collectors like us and hard to compare the two, but things can change quickly on the internet)

I use Tripadvisor all the time. It is a great resource.

Most of my posts are in the Cancun forum. When planning my coming Africa trip, I checked out all of the hotels and camps recommended by my agent and even made a change or two. Overall, I was impressed with my agent's picks and feel more comfortable about the entire trip.

I post in TripAdvisor.

I don't spend a lot of time in such sites, but I find sites like TripAdvisor.com & BetterBidding.com very useful when I need them.

FTer Trekker just posted an excellent trip report on the Bariloche area... a great read!!

mcgahat Feb 21, 2007 3:08 am

I do post on TripAdvisor since I get a lot of helpful information form the site. I dont post on every hotel but try to post the ones that are exceptionally good or bad.

tcook052 Feb 21, 2007 8:29 pm

I post on and use tripadvisor on a regular basis, posting everything from hotels to all inclusive resorts and find the feedback invaluable. The site helped me pick a NYC gem, Belvedere Hotel not far from Times Square, and a couple more hotels in Provence for an upcoming Apr. trip. So invaluable. ^ :)

I too post and read tripadvisor on a regular basis. All posts that I wrote related to vacation travels, covering unique finds in restaurants and hotels. Have done only one hotel review. I think tripadvisor and fodors forum are quite useful for vacation travels to any part of the world.
I usually take restaurant and hotel reviews with a grain of salt.

cockpitvisit Feb 21, 2007 9:34 pm

I write hotel reviews on a regular basis, especially for hotels not previously covered by reviews. I also use the tripadvisor reviews to choose hotels. Some reviews may be skewed, but in general, the information quality is surprisingly good.

I don't participate in the forums; in fact, prior to reading this thread, I didn't realize they had forums at all :D

Gaucho100K Feb 21, 2007 10:38 pm

Im active on the Argentina TA forums, and find that they are very different from FT. It took me a while to get used to the different style... however, its interesting to see that every board has its fair share of conflicts and trolls... :D

bowdenj Feb 21, 2007 10:54 pm

I write for almost all my hotel stays (although sometimes I get behind) - I'm up to around 49. Roach review was my last one:

One thing that ticks me off about TA is that they restrict the reviews for locations outside the USA... e.g. you cannot review a restaurant in Buenos Aires.

tenmoc Feb 22, 2007 4:03 am

My basic opinion of tripadvisor is this. Take it with more than just a grain of salt. I have loved hotels they've trashed for silly reasons. And not liked highly rated ones.

I personally think TA proves the ugly american theory.

Also wish you could tell what level of room people paid for and what they expected for the money.

goaliemn Feb 22, 2007 7:00 am

Whenever I look at using a hotel, I always check Trip Advisor for reviews of it, and I usually post one after I return :)

Yes... but please note this happens on FT all the time... folks get elite status by paying only heavily discounted fares and then whine whine and whine because they didnt get some silly additional perk when flying on an award F ticket. The "difficult" customer syndrome is something that is more common than we all think.

I've been planning a trip to Thailand, reading some of the Phuket forum. There's a nice argument going on between Europeans and Australians about using towels to save one's chair at the pool.

I enjoy reading the international reviews, seeing slang from foreign countries.
