BKK - Jan 21-30

Family emergency necessitating my GF's departure to Japan.

I will be encamped at the Conrad; have reasonable local knowledge but will likely wish to explore the adjacent environs.

Contact me by pm or otherwise if you are feeling adventurous.

Hmm, I'm starting to think there will be quie a few FTers in BKK at that time. See also http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=637372.

I arrive on 1/21 depart on 1/25...

Condition One Dec 28, 2006 2:21 pm

I will be arriving 1/22, and will depart on 1/27. I'll also be staying at the Conrad. This will be my first time in Bangkok, so I'll probably stick to local touristy things. Let me know if you guys want to meet up for dinner or something.

It looks like we are starting to get a few people here. Any one else coming to BKK at that time?

Yes I too will be there 20-23rd.

BangkokTraveler Dec 29, 2006 8:52 am

Hi all, I won't be back there until mid-February. :(

ขอให้โชคดสวัสดีปีใหม่ (Happy New Year and good luck)

ak333 Dec 29, 2006 12:12 pm

So far it looks like 1/22 or 23 is going to work best.

I'll be in BKK then too. I'll keep an eye on the thread to see what develops.

Condition One Jan 1, 2007 1:16 pm

Any thoughts on the current security situation? I have a wait and see approach, but my parents are understandably freaking out.

Unless the bombings continue during the next few days, I'm still leaving this week (will be in Thailand much of the month). I figure odds are very slim I'll be in the wrong place at the wrong time ...

Right now, I'm still going, but I also have a wait and see attitude.

I will be in BKK throughout ,ost of Jan (it's home base after all).

Security has noticably increased around major hotels and public places. My office block quite near the Conrad, and security has been beefed up there for sure.

The Thai PM has asked the public to co-operate over the next 2 months by reporting any suspicious activity - but for those of us who have to live here life goes on. I and my family do small common sense things like:

-take a taxi rather than public transport (ozone layer less of an immediate concern for me)
-don't linger at train/bus/skytrain stations
-try and travel slightly off peak times

But we all still go out to eat, hit the pubs etc...... Eric Clapton is playing on 15th and I'm taking the lads (teenagers) to see some REAL guitar playing. :D

Gathering on the Monday evening (22nd) seems like a reasonable plan. The next thing would be to decide where and at what time to meet. A few drinks worked well last time prior to folks working out if they wanted to stay and eat or whatever. The location then was the Big Mango bar on the edge of Nana Plaza - one of BKK's colourful red-light areas.

A (slightly) more gentle start, but still nearby, might be to meet at Gulliver's Tavern on Soi 5 off Sukhumvir Road ( Soi = Lane). Drinks and reasonable food (Thai and Western) avalable. Good 'people watching' opportunities. Afterwards, I'd be happy to show folk around the somewhat 'colourful' immediate area. Gullivers is about 300m into Soi 5 on the RHS, just past the Amari Hotel. See here:

So, I propose to meet at Gullivers Tavern, 1900 hrs on Mon 22 Jan. Who's in?

TK - yes.

I'll arrive on the 16th from SIN. Have a tentative hotel res for the 20-24th. I'm in no rush to rush up to Chiang Mai, and have a few errands to run while in the City of Angels.

So, barring the unknown, put me down for a definite maybee. :D

I unfortunately missed the last meet-up, but I really hope to make it for this one...Gulliver's on the 22nd sounds perfect.
