Proposed LAX Do
Would any LAX (incl BUR/ONT/LGB/SNA) based FTers be interested in organizing a FT DO. I have driven past the Proud Bird restaurant on Aviation and thought it would be a fun place to spend a couple of hours watching landings and takeoffs.
I was thinking a weekend in June or July. Let's see how many takers we get :p |
Looks like there were 17 or so at the last Proud Bird Do: http://flyertalk.com/forum/showthrea...ighlight=Proud

I'm always up for a summer weekend in LA. The second and third weekends in July and are good for me.

I am interested, will likely be travelling to the LA area for business repeatedly over the summer.
Calling IceTrojan who recently commented on the lack of LAX DOs ;)... |
The Proud Bird was fun! Too bad they don't have that great happy hour deal on the weekends. Actually, I was thinking about this same topic recently. Especially, since I spent Freddies weekend on my AA Fly3 run.
Count me in... and if I can help, please let me know. Tina |
Ok, Proud Bird is basically a week-day place & TelevisionTdTina did a good job of getting us out.
On the weekends - which is when most LA FTers get together - it's Manhattan Beach area etc (which is either convenient or mutually inconvenient for all). There are obviously other things to do (Freddies Friday for example), but basically if you're serious about people getting together, check the Community calendar & just pick a weekend & post that THAT is the time to get together. You also need to determine if you're going to make it a dinner only in which case you'll get locals, or if you're going to build it up into a 'do', in which case more happens/etc. Cheers. |
Count me in. Will gladly trek down from LAS just about any weekend.
|
mr. & mrs. delacpa would love to see out-of-town FT'rs around "our neck of the woods"
|
As long as I can get a good fare I will definitely come. I have never been to LA and I am looking for an excuse to go.
ADDED: Since no one has actually proposed a date would Friday June 2nd OR Saturday June 3rd be too early? |
If I am not out of the country, I will definitely trek over to LAX on a weekend for a DO. :)
|
Please count me in as well.. Just tell me the dates....

It might be too early for those flying in from out of town, but then again maybe not.
I can make June 2nd, but that's a Friday which means rush hour traffic for those coming from dif parts of LA. Also, might be difficult for those flying in from out of town if you get any out of towners. Sat June 3rd I'm probably out since I have to be at airport at 5:45pm to fly to VIE. I can meet folk for a drink at or near LAX though before then. So first thing is for folk to figure out if June 2nd weekend works - or do a poll suggesting a couple of dif weekends - and then pick which works best. If you do that, you might want to wait until Monday when folk are back from visiting their mothers this weekend. Then you need to decide if it's dinner only or some other activities + dinner. Cheers. |
I'll be out of the country till June 11.
|
Well since you're the one who started the thread you get to pick some alternate weekends for consideration :)
Those who can make the June 2nd/3rd may want to start a dif thread for a get-together that weekend. Not like we can't have more than one LAX Do. Cheers. |
I don't know how people feel about the Jul 4th weekend - but I will be around LA.
Otherwise the weekend of Jul 8/9 or 15/16. |
Well, I'm DEFINITELY out June 2 or 3, and the rest of my summer travel is TBA.
|
No go for me June 2 or 3rd.... in OAK. Sorry. :(

That then gives people like bschoebel time to find cheap fares. Right now I'm in town either weekend. Cheers. |

Well Proud Bird can be a weekend place, but on weekdays they have a 'happy hour pricing' for both meals & drinks. FTers like to eat/drink - they like it even better when it's less expensive ;) :D
I'm going from memory here on the weekday pricing, but think the meal, which was buffet appetizer munchies, plus salad or soup plus either prime rib or salmon or chicken & veggies/potatoes plus cheesecake for dessert w/ tax & tip came out to less than $18/person - can't remember exactly & can't remember if that included booze during the meal. But it was a pretty good deal. Bar drinks were also less. It's just me but for Dos that are dinners only I expect just locals. For folk coming in from out of town it's fun to add additional activities (unless they're on a MR & then they don't care; dinner only is fine). Could be a day at the beach followed by dinner & bars, or a day at the baseball game followed by dinner/bars, etc. I'm currently around both weekends. Cheers. |
Sharon was pretty dead on with the cost of a weekday event at the Proud Bird. See the second link for early bird dinner details. That $18. ish estimate would include tax/tip/and a glass of wine. Sadly, not available during the weekend. Looks like they have a good sunday brunch that includes the bubbly.
http://www.theproudbird.com/restaurant.html http://www.theproudbird.com/pdf/Prou...ird_Dinner.pdf Happy Hour is offered Monday through Friday 4:00 to 7:00 pm and features complimentary hors d'oeuvres and $2.50 house wines, domestic beers and Margaritas. Happy Hour couldn’t be spent in a better environment with the view of the approach runway whether you’re looking out the windows or enjoying the weather on their relaxing patio, you can sit back and relax as you watch the world move around you |
