Where did the term "Do" come from?

For the life of me I can't figure out what "Do" is short for.

Every time this question comes up, I refer the asker to the dictionary.

For example in www.m-w.com (the Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary), entry 2 (noun), definition 3a : a festive get-together : AFFAIR, PARTY.

And since the answers to help the OP have been ably set forth and documented, I'll close this oft-asked thread/question. Ocn Vw 1K, Moderator.
