I think we may be on the same flights :)

I'm on the last PIT-ART flight this Friday as well, heading back out first thing Saturday morning on my way to IAH.

My return is on Monday May 30th, the 2pm into ART, and 5:50pm out on my way back to EWR.

Perhaps a "nice letter" about this employee's "diligence" is in order.

After all, the impending merger may result in a smaller workforce and it would be good to separate the wheat from the chaff... ;)

Trip report - Memorial Day Weekend

A short ART trip report

Flew out of DEN on Sunday and almost missed all the flights since I was checking in 40 mins before the flight. Too many cops on the highways and hence missed the 45 min cut off for check-in. The price of a speeding ticket could have been more than the cost of flying to ART 3 times. :D

At PIT went up to the core section for good wireless access as recommeded by fellow 'FTers. The flight to ART needed volunteers due to weight restrictions. I volunteered to stay at PIT on US Air expense and save on ART hotel cost but they ended up boarding everyone. The co-pilot was very nice and was wondering what I was doing in ART all the way from DEN? Military??? $2 tickets... :o

Had a pickup from Ontario Place Hotel and Mr. Murray knew right away that I was on a Mileage Run. Very kind and friendly. The hotel is excellent for the price and location. Felt good to be surrounded by non-branded quality stuff (not a single chain in town). The restaurants in town are good and not too pricey. Remember to bring a light wind cheater or sweater as it gets a bit nippy in the shade.

Watched the Memorial Day parade in a place filled with history. EXCELLENT!!! ^ ^ ^

From Watertown to Ottawa?

I have three days between my flights and am thinking about visiting Sacketts Harbor for an afternoon and then driving to Ottawa (which I hear is nice) for a couple of days? Any FT input on that plan and the area would be appreciated - I will have my wife and 9 year old daughter with me.
Thanks.

dhammer53 Jun 2, 2005 2:07 pm

tofromord ,

You should consider the Lake Placid area of New York. That area is good for 2-3 days easy.

"Yes, there is a lot of hotels in Watertown. Arsenal Road is the Watertown exit and has all kinds of hotels and places to eat, including a mall! That is the ONLY thing in Watertown."

I wonder if this terminal is going to be more like the bus station at BLF or more of a real looking airport like BKW? ;)

I've got one RT booked... weekend at IAH when the Pirates are at Houston, Aug 12-14. Going out of CRW on Fri Aug 12 CRW-PIT-ART then ART-PIT-CLT-IAH (booked in F), reverse on Sunday Aug 14. Got the first flights into ART on the 12th and last ones out on the 14th, so I avoided an overnight there, but I have the 2 hour layovers as they circle the plane around upstate NY. It was nice to get a confirmed F fare (6 segments, 4 in F) for $39.80 RT. That'll never happen again.

Only screwup we've made here is that we should have repeated this a few times to get to CP. ShellNYC pointed this out that the confirmed F fares do 2X EQM's, even on the seg's booked in Y when there's no F. So, we get almost 8K EQM out of this, not almost 4K (plus another 2K for the CRW-INT RT). Hindsight is 20-20. I could still try to book some of the transcons still listed on orbitz... would still take about 6 of them to make CP, as I don't see much more travel the rest of the year.

Watertown (ART) is a small airport.....only one terminal if you wish to call it that....ha ha ha...is more like you walk into the back door and you are in the only main room of the airport...Baggage claim is the lobby floor.....all employees...TSA Airlines etc. wear many hats...they all work together doing it all. Some of there employees work for both TSA and Airlines....or Airport Employees and Airlines...
If you are staying over...look up Ontario Hotel in Sackets Harbor ( a small village by Watertown.....beautiful place full of history, with all you need in walking distance to include a historical walk. Only thing you won't have in Sackets that you would have if you stay in the city of Watertown (if you wish to call it a city) is the mall.
Sackets is small village run by locals.....NO CHAINS.

Hope you all enjoy your trip......I live up here if you need more info...just ask.

OnDaFlipSide Jun 3, 2005 7:38 am

I would not recommend arriving 20 minutes before flight......yes 2 hours is exessive but 1 hour would be best.....the airlines as well as TSA stop baggage screening to move to the checkpoint to screen...if you arrive 20 minutes out you may not get on the flight. I know the airport well TRUST ME!!!!!

I'm right behind you for MY first ART trip! SEA-PIT-ART leaving Sunday at 11PM, returning to SEA Monday at 8:13PM. Then repeat 48 hours later. Then repeat. Then repeat. Then repeat ad naseum. But I'll reach CP in 2005!

wgrc1971 Jun 5, 2005 4:04 pm

Am I reading this thread right? You people found $2 RT fares to Watertown?? I assume this was because of an error. How often does this happen, sounds like we should be checking very often. How is the best way to find these mistakes.

For those that haven't taken their trip yet, Alexandria Bay, Clatyon and the 1000 Islands is a good place to visit a little over a half hour away. Tours of Boldt Castle on heart island are interesting. Clayton also has the Antique Boat Museum if you would be interested in that.

Yep. There was about 26 hours of buying frenzy where around 1,000 $2 (plus tax) tickets were purchased to Watertown and another couple of cities. How often does it happen? Maybe 1-7 times per year??? Anyway, check here [FT's Mileage Run Forum] a couple times a day if you are serious about trying for the "error flight lottery"!

My partner and I start our first $2 trip this upcoming Friday.... ART - PIT - LAS and returning on Monday... LAS - PIT - ART.

Anyone else on flights those days?

William

Wireless Jun 5, 2005 6:05 pm

yay, I'm in the PIT US club, with 1 minute to boarding. Yellow cab ordered up for my luxurious transport to the five star Econolodge Watertown.

The lounge matrons were very nice, no hassle at all.

Time for the mighty Beechcraft!

Wow, that's amazing, thanks for the tip. Definitely worth continually checking out!

yevlesh2 Jun 8, 2005 8:58 pm

Did anyone try Watertown's "other" rental car company, Rent-A-Wreck?
Or did everyone go with Enterprise?

Wireless Jun 8, 2005 9:17 pm

I opted for the Yellow Cab with the 'blaring country music' upgrade

I am flying into ART on US 4653 on Friday 6/10 and departing on US 4654 later that afternoon.

wgrc1971 Jun 10, 2005 11:46 am

I am curious if any FT'ers who got in on the ART deal spent any time in Alexandria Bay. My wife's family has a place there and we go all the time and love. Hope someone was able to take advantage. If you are still going and are looking for 1,000 Islands advice, let me know!

billiam Jun 25, 2005 7:40 pm

At the Days Inn right now. They have a van that can pick up/drop guests from anywhere in Watertown and Ft. Drumm. So I had them drop me off at the mall after I checked in. Had dinner at Barkeaters at the mall, which was ok. Good that it wasn't a chain, serving typical Applebee type fare.

By being able to post this, kinda implies some kind of internet access ;) I'm able to pickup an open wifi network that I think is setup by the hotel, but run by these folks:
http://www.gtc4me.com/hotelhighspeed...rhoteliers.htm

The hotel also has a computer near the checkin desk that guests can use, and I spotted 1 or 2 ethernet cables that I presume guests can use to hook their laptops up. Hope all this info helps. I'll post pics of the hotel when I get back.

I am on the Friday night 9:05 PM PIT-ART flight and the Sunday afternoon 1:05 PM ART-PIT flight in August. It looks like both of these flights are usually sold out well before the departure date (my Friday night flight is already sold out 4 weeks out). Have any of you been on these flights on these days and if so, did they end up needing volunteers? Thanks for all replies.

I'm going out tomorrow on my run tomorrow, and I guess I'll see you when I get off at PIT on Sunday ;) I'll have my FT tag on my bag.

To those waiting for pics, I haven't had time to upload them, but I'm guessing there ain't a whole of demand to see pics of a Days Inn in Watertown either, compared to say Bora Bora Nui :p

In all seriousness, I would like to make it out there next year, and Gleff's and other people's trip reports doesn't make it any easier to resist going sooner...

Amazing what this $2 fare has done to stimulate the local economy; hotel lodgings, rental cars, taxi rides, restaurant bills, etc.

Not to mention the tax revenues generated...

Cookie,

Many wise Flyertalkers have learned not to respond to a thread if they have nothing positive to add. Currently, I'm not so wise.

I might also suggest that you leave the sarcastic answers to the cynical old timers around here. New posters aren't allowed to be sarcastic till they qualify for Omni and Coupon Connection.

Wasn't being sarcastic, I was serious. I should have explained myself better.

One way to look at it, is that these extra travelers into Watertown is a "boost" for the local economy.

Another way to look at is that ART is a small airport in which local people (many of them soldiers or their families) utilize so they don't have to drive an hour to SYR. This air service also services the small communities of Ogdensburg and Messina, NY (who are an hour and half and two hours respectively from Watertown). Add in people who are just flying around for mileage purposes, and obviously the end result is people who actually need the flight are not able to utilize the service because it sometimes does not take long to fill up 19 seats when there are 3 airports involved. Also, because of this error in pricing, there are no affordable flights out of Watertown for the next year.

Another note, Watertown is a military town which has seen some additional brigades being added to Fort Drum. THAT is a boost for the economy, for sure!

So you see, I really wasn't being sarcastic; I just didn't elaborate on my opinion.

Of course, everyone is welcome to visit Watertown and take in the sights of the area!

Thanks Dan!

I will fly my last ART runs this week but I am already looking forward to a few OSL-PVG trips:D

I am a bit upset because US Airways didn't let me reroute (without repricing) to SYR on a 6 hours INVOL schedule change. Any suggestions?

MKE-MR Aug 5, 2005 6:10 pm

So, now that it seems a large number of people have done this already, I still don't really see a consensus regarding lodging in the area.

Some people supported the small independent hotel for $60/night, while others went into town. Has anybody just laid out on the picnic table yet as was discussed early on in the thread?

Just looking to evaluate my options for my almost-too-short-to-bother-with-a-hotel overnight layover. :)
