Sorry I couldn't make it last night, I got held up :(

Sorry I couldn't go, got stuck on the other side of the river. Wish I knew about this earlier, I could have planned.

That being said, when is the next happy hour? mid-May around Dulles or in DC? How about Fairmont hotel 24th and M Street. It is near metro, has nice lobby bar area and if it nice, we can sit outside in the garden courtyard.
Another option is the rooftop terrace at the Washington Hotel on 17th St.

We missed you. Anyway, it has been suggested that we schedule with the baseball DO the weekend of 13-May. Open for suggestions.

Newcomer to DC

Greetings, FTers
It looks like you all in DC are a pretty active group. I'm relocating to Washington in May or June from Southern California looking forward to meeting you all.

I'm a mostly NW flyer, having lived for 15 years in St. Paul.

For Summer Happy Hour: Lauriol Plaza

lauriol Plaza has the best Margaritas in DC, and a nice roof deck. Also they have street level seating. Closest metro is Dupont Circle (red line), and possibly a green line stop that I don't remember. Especially good for summer eating on the roof deck. Perhaps the DC happy hour has gone to this place before?

headinclouds Apr 20, 2005 7:49 pm

No, we have not had a happy hour there. As it is across the street from my house, I'm all for holding the May event there. No reservations though and adding people to a group after seating is difficult. I'll let others evaluate the Margaritas as I was underwhelmed by them, IMO.

It would be awesome to do Margarita's there - but any place that doesnt take reservations will be quite painful - as we observed at the SWT - was it last month or month before ????

Mid May? Week or Weekend?

Reservations, Travel Writers, And Evite

Yes, the place gets quite crowded especially if the weather is good. The most recent time I was there was on a Sun, a couple of weeks ago and we had to wait approx 20 mins for a roof deck table for approx 4. But a week night might not be quite as bad. Well still crowded, but not like a Thurs night or Sun. brunch.

Just because they don't officially take reservations doesn't mean they absolutely can't do it. E.g. if you went in person and talked to the manager and told them e.g. that people were coming in by airplane for the event, they might either take a reservation or somehow work with you on the day of the event. This would probably be best done by someone who has gone there somewhat frequently, and less optimally I guess a letter or fax could be sent but probably best done in person. Also in a sense all of us posters, are however vaguely, travel writers and reviewers. You could use that as well. If you like I could even go over there :).

Finally as a general tip for all these FT events, I would recommend people look at using Evite as it gives you a quick count right on one screen of who has clicked yes, etc. You can set up an open Evite where the invitee does not need to be on a list previously entered in the system. E.g. the person could jump from the FT thread, and post their reply on Evite. I just think Evite makes it a lot easier for the event organizer and I have used it extensively. They also have bells and whistles like custom survey questions, photo albums, and integration with Paypal for paid events.

And finally, what do you think are DC best margaritas if not Laurial? :)

Very Low Washington Fares May Expire Tonight Less $100 AllIn

As most of you may know, FlyI introduced a sale which UA and perhaps others have matched. For example, BOS to IAD roundtrip is about $96 including taxes on UA or FlyI. I imagine similar fares to some other markets. If we can nail down a date then perhaps out of town people could more easily come. The BOS to IAD is good through 6/14 on select days of week 7 day adv purch no min stay. $136 rt for peak days. It has literally been years since BOS to WAS under $100 all in! The last such thing I recall was a DL shuttle deal in summer 00 or 01 for $100 even including tax.

Tuesday, June 14th is Flag Day (yes, I looked at a calendar for that tidbit of information ;) ) ... how about that as a starting point to discuss a June happy hour.

June is late, but let's shoot for a downtown outdoor with a view type venue. I don't know what my travel schedule is for June but for the moment, this works for me. Anyone else? Alternative dates and venues welcome.

Tom - Welcome to DC - with you & thezipper - that'll now be three of us NW flyers at the happy hours! (Everyone else is UA/US & headinclouds is one of the only AA's)!

***

As for the May dates - I'm going to try to make that one - however, I've got some friends coming in from out of town & they want to do a "RockStar weekend" of partying & clubbing so I don't know what my sobriety will be & whether I'll be able to make it for an extended time for the after-party (or pre-party?) of the Baseball-DO.

On a side-note, does anyone know of any moderate priced hotels in the DC area that have in-room jacuzzis? My friend wanted me to get him a room that has a jacuzzi for when he comes up here.

As for June 14 - that day looks great to me. My month of June is currently wide open (July is horrible) - so I'll be wherever we go in June!

The Hilton at Alexandria Mark Plaza should still have them even tho we have not been there since it was a Radisson at least 10 years ago.
You should also inquire about them at the Hilton Garden Inns. Altho we have not stayed at one in the DC area, most of the others we have used thruout the country do have jacuzzi suites.
I'll probably think of more after a while because we have probably stayed in twenty or so DC area hotels over the years.

bhatnasx Apr 21, 2005 12:46 pm

Thanks, Monitor - I'll call the Hilton Mark Center - interestingly - when I did a stay there for the ACAQ promo, I got upgraded as a Gold to a suite - Saturday night, 1 night stay - I lived about 10 minutes from there at the time, so I didn't spend the night, just checked in & met some friends out. At the bar, I met up with a friend & we were talking & I mentioned my upgrade. Since I wasn't using the room that night, he asked if he could use it for his girlfriend & him. I said sure & gave him the key card. I told him, just check out using the TV & don't worry about paying for it - leave it on my CC. He did the express checkout & called me up at work on Monday to thank me - he was overly thankful. I said sure, just hold onto the bill til my point post. Turns out when they upgraded me, they didn't change the rate! I was booked at a 379.00 rate & they charged my CC for that (the original rate was about 79.00 & I did a Best Price Guarantee so I'd get $50 back on it). I complained to the hotel - which took about 5 days to reverse the charges on my CC. They gave me a comp room for future use if I ever needed one & I used it the last time I had friends in town. This time, no screw ups though!

I'll give them a call.

Thanks!
