Oz Fest 19 Hobart TAS Australia. USA Memorial Day Weekend

Friday May 26, Saturday May 27, Sunday May 28, 2023

After discussions Hobart, Tasmania has been chosen for Oz Fest 19. Oz Fest 05 2008 was held in Hobart after the first 2 Oz Fest’s were held in Sydney followed by Brisbane and then Melbourne. We repeat the sequence.

There have been 18 successful Oz Fests so far - in Sydney (3 times), Brisbane (2 times), Melbourne (2007 & 2022), Hobart, Cairns, Adelaide, Darwin, Canberra, Perth, Alice Springs-Ayers Rock/Uluru , New Zealand, Gold Coast, Newcastle & Noosa QLD.

Oz Fest 17 BNE 2020 was postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic. We tried again and Oz Fest 17 BNE 2021 had a smaller attendance than normal due to Australia not being open to international visitors, other than from New Zealand. Australia fully opened to the world in February 2022 and 33 attended Oz Fest 18 2022 in Melbourne. 16 of the 33 had attended Oz Fest 4 2007 in Melbourne. Covid-19 (precautions) effected the non attendance of some. And for some Covid-19 during/after Oz Fest 18 was an issue. An Oz Fest they will remember.

The May USA Memorial Day weekend seems very popular with USA based Flyer-talkers, and that is the weekend that was most favoured by far. Again chosen that weekend - as we have for all other 18 Oz Fests. Around half the attendees are USA based at each Oz Fest (other than 2021).

That public holiday in the USA is Monday May 29, 2023 Remember if you leave Australia on afternoon of Monday, you arrive back in the USA also early morning on Monday. A lot of time, no matter where you live in the USA, to get back home, unpack, have an early night, and get organised for a day at work next day etc.

The weather for the past 18 Oz Fests has been in general, superb and sunny. Despite June 1st, being our official Winter start date. Even in Hobart Tasmania our most southern city, we were truly blessed with unusually nice weather in 2008. We hope for the same in 2023, but Tassie weather can be brisk and refreshing.

A common FT access account for the ad-hoc organising committee titled Oz Fest (Oz Fest Organisers)” was approved by the Flyertalk Community Director, and the early informational posts here in this thread will show as that account, so they can be edited at will by those involved.

Our ad-hoc Committee will be tracking attendees, and hotels, and flights, and activity sign ups etc in these early posts. These are incredibly time consuming to keep updated, and all attendees owe them a huge vote of thanks. Hopefully we can once again call on the falconea’s to be name tag/table tag supremos, and we are well on our way!

It is anticipated that the Sunday bus will cost about $20pp on top of lunch. The $ numbers were initially quite horrendous but I believe I have pulled it back to the $20 mark.

We have set up a no cost reservation ticket system to indicate your attendance at the 3 main events on Eventbrite. We have to confirm and guarantee numbers with the vendors. That confirms you will make the payments, even if you no show for some reason.

Sunday 28th May
Trip out of Hobart morning-lunch-afternoon.
Pickup for those heading to lunch on Sunday, the bus will leave from outside where we have dinner on Saturday night. "The Drunken Admiral" at 10:30 with a return time of about 15:15.

First stop will be The Margate Train This is about 20 minutes south of Hobart. We'll stop for 45 min - 1 hr just for a look around.

From there we will head another 15 minutes south to Kettering to the Oyster Cove Inn for a counter lunch. A great scenic location with some pretty good food. This venue will be strictly pay as you go.
Facebook-->https://www.facebook.com/Oyster.Cove.Bar.and.Grill/

After lunch we will head back to Hobart via a different route and people will be able to do their own thing for a few hours.

Sunday bus cost will be heavily dependent on how many people we have and therefore share the cost of bus hire. The rest will be pay as you go. At this time we expect about 20~25 of the ~40 platinum's to attend. While some people will have rental cars. sharing the bus cost helps all.

Please pay the $20 money to kpc on the Saturday, with the $80 Saturday evening (for those doing both). Strong preference is not to collect the bus trip money on the Sunday.

From post 195--> It is anticipated that the Sunday bus will cost about $20pp on top of lunch. The $ numbers were initially quite horrendous but I believe I have pulled it back to the $20 mark

Dinner
For the survivors there will be a casual dinner at a venue to be advised.
=====================

Over time this post will be have more information and links to other posts in this thread.

In late February – March we start to think about activities and talk to suppliers, vendors and restaurants, as by that time we have rough guide of attendee numbers. Before that time very little detailed planning happens. We set up a web based reservation system to book and pay for activities in late March-April.

Some activities require pre payment and others a commitment to attend. Some people attend all activities and others a few or maybe only the main Saturday night dinner. All are welcome albeit all or 1 activity. On the Friday some of the early attendees meet for self arranged lunch/what ever. People can start to arrive from Wednesday and some do not leave until the following Tuesday/Wednesday. Some people leave Oz Fest on the Sunday.

The Oz Fest team base costs on people attending activities based on known flights and the history of similar events attended. Due to commitments the Oz Fest team has made/will make to restaurants, suppliers and/or vendors no refunds are possible, unless another person takes your place. We often have to pay upfront for activities and/or restaurants. The cost does not include the fee (~6%) Oz Fest pay to the reservation web site. They will be extra when people pay.

Generally Oz Fest has
  • Friday evening drinks-dinner
  • Saturday activity or activities. Sometimes a bus day trip
  • Saturday evening Oz Fest dinner. Tends to get 100% participation
  • Sunday activity or activities.
  • Sunday evening casual dinner. Often self organised with no pre booking

Accommodation in Hobart from 5 star to backpacker. As anywhere, you get what you pay for. It is unlikely to be difficult to get accommodation on 26- 29 May. As Hobart is a small city, chain hotels are not as prominent as in the larger state capital cities.

There are some international hotel chains are in Hobart

We use flight information to predict activity participation. Helps a lot with planning. If people book a flight that is a good guide they will really attend. We always get late cancellations and late conformations

Pre CV19 Air NZ operated AKL-HBA. Direct flights from Hobart to Auckland resume 3 Jul 2022.

About Hobart, TAS Australia (click on the blue or underlined links)

FT thread (2018-2019)-->Hotels and restaurants in Hobart, Tasmania

Hobart travel centre by City of Hobart

3 days in Hobart on Australia.com (Tourism Australia 2022) links are to private web sites.

Salamanca Market Now in it's 50th year, Salamanca Market - currently operating as Tasmania's Own Market - is open each Saturday from 8.30 am - 3.00 pm.

Hobart

Why visit Hobart
Nestled between river and mountains, Tasmania's capital city packs a punch. Hobart is one of the oldest cities in Australia, lending it a sense of historic reverence and sophistication. Protected by the magnificent Mount Wellington, Hobart gives off a vibe of quiet confidence in a relaxed, peaceful environment. With beautiful landscapes and some of the planet's freshest air, Hobart is a welcome retreat for the world-weary.

Best time to visit Hobart
Tasmania can get cold so the best time for visitors is over the summer months (December to February) where the temperatures are at their warmest. Take note that summer is also peak travel time so expect other tourists if you visit during summer.

Getting around Hobart
Hobart has reliable public buses available for those without cars. To use public transport, purchase a metro Greencard. This will give you access to discounted rates and a daily cap. To travel to the infamous MONA, there are private ferries that you can take departing from Brooke st Pier on Hobart's waterfront.

What to do in Hobart
Tasmania's capital, Hobart, sits on the river Derwent and is known to charm visitors with its mix of heritage buildings, progressive culture, and breathtaking scenes of nature. Whether you want to marvel at traditional architecture, be transported by a world-class gallery, experience otherwordly festivals like Dark MOFO, or be in awe of natural beauty, Hobart is the place to go. Enjoy a waterfront coffee and stroll, visit a brewery in a historic part of town and let the spirit of Hobart draw you in.

Free things to do in Hobart
Salamanca Markets

Begin your Hobart escape at Salamanca Markets, where you'll find fresh produce, live music, and artisan snacks, brews and crafts.

Hobart Museum & Art Gallery
Take a stroll through the Hobart Museum & Art Gallery, where you'll get the added pleasure of viewing the building itself; one of Hobart's most beautiful heritage architectural sites.

Fun things to do in Hobart
Museum of Old and New Art - MONA

Catch a ferry out from Hobart to MONA and wander around this unique museum. Make a day of it and visit the adjoining restaurants or sip a Martinin at Void Bar, a cocktail bar buried seventeen metres underground. Idyllically located and with beautiful architecture, there's much to enjoy beyond the incredible installations.

The Cascade Brewery
Located about 4km from the city centre and easily accessible by public transport, taking a tour of this historic brewery is a must do. The cascade brewery is the oldest operating brewery in Australia and looks the part with its formidable yet beautiful gothic exterior. Take note it gets busy so it's always best to book ahead.

Eat & Drink in Hobart
Visit the pier and waterfront of Hobart to enjoy good eats with views to match. Choose from more casual seafood options such as fish and chips, or indulge in a spot of fine dining. Visit a local brewery like Shambles brewery to enjoy craft beer in an old warehouse. Visit Franklin Square between 4pm and 9pm on a Friday for a food market extraordinaire. There's food trucks, musicians as well as tables and grassy spaces all centred around the fountain.

Oh yes for Oz Fest 19 as my first , finally , now that Melbourne - Oz Fest 18 Melbourne - was missed & was in Marrakech instead with other FTers but not enough for a “ DO “ .

Love Tassie , & to return to Saffire 🤞🏻hopefully , since it had to be aborted for more than a couple of years along with other destinations .
