Paris for Thanksgiving?

Anyone around Paris next week?

lisamcgu Nov 17, 2003 3:47 pm

Hey one of my fav FTers will be in Paris!

I used to think it was interesting to experience American holidays in other countries. Thanksgiving, 4th of July, ... Never was as good as if I'd stayed home though, at least for me.

Hope the best for you. May all the holiday's spirit find you wherever you are across the globe http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

Possiby. Still setting up the arrangements today. Are you up for turkey dinner?

Turkey sounds good. Do they have them in France? http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif

Now I'm being told I might have to drive up to somewhere in Benelux Thursday. We'll see.

stimpy Nov 17, 2003 7:28 pm

Lisa, when I'm overseas, I don't even think about U.S. Holidays. I adapt myself to the local culture and celebrate their holidays.

In America, you are bombarded with advertisements and decorations for each major holiday. Absent that, the holidays don't cross your mind. Certain holidays are meant for family but family should always be your priority so we shouldn't care so much about these holidays which only have value to retailers.

DEK Nov 18, 2003 6:45 am

My partner and I will be there, arriving 11/27 and leaving 11/30. Will be spending time with his family but am sure we (or I) could get away to meet up with some Flyertalkers http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif.

M2swim Nov 18, 2003 7:38 am

My family and I were there three years ago. We went the other way for the traditional Thanksgiving dinner. Mexican food at a Chi Chi's in Paris (before the hep A scare around the states) was a meal that our family will never forget!!!

I'm available for drinks or dinner on either Thurs 11/27 or Fri 11/28.
Could do something wild, like one of the Bateaux Mouches?

DEK Nov 18, 2003 5:21 pm

Un bateau mouche ride sounds good to me! By wild do you mean like, boats, drinks and flyertalkers = wild? http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif

Either Thursday or Friday would be fine with us also.

Will be around Paris between Nov. 26-30th. Than goes on to London.

My first time in Paris, open to whatever people come up with.

What I consider "normal" amongst FlyerTalkers, might be considered "wild" to others. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif

By "wild" I guess I meant, splurge a little. The cruise is not exactly the NYC Circle Line. There seem to be different options available, including dinner at the Eiffel Tower, or dinner on board. I would almost want to eat either before or after, just so I could focus on the sights. What do you think?

If either evening works for you guys, then maybe we can try for Thursday evening. That way it makes a nice overview of the city for those who have never been to Paris, or for those like me, who haven't been in a loooong time.

If you all want an American Thanksgiving dinner there, here's a story in the Washington Post about restaurants in Paris that are serving turkey:

I am taking my fiancee to Paris for Thanksgiving. We arrive on Thanksgiving day just in time for dinner and leave on the Sunday around noon. Just a quick trip. It might be nice for her to meet some FTers and realize that I am not the only Miles junkie in the world. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/biggrin.gif

Oh... Really hoping for a BUMP on the Sunday CDG>SFO flight! They stopped selling tickets last week! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

Vulcan Nov 19, 2003 7:32 pm

Is there anything really going on? I am holding ewr-DUB and EWR-AMS, but can switch to CDG if there will be a FT get together.
Ed
Edited to add that it would need to be the 27th or 28th.
Thanks
Ed

Meeting up on Thursday 11/27 would work for us. How about meeting at the Pont de l'Alma at either 3:30PM for the 4:00PM bateau mouche ride or at 5:30PM for the 6:00PM ride. After the bateau mouche we can go for drinks and/or dinner (may be too early for dinner after the 4:00PM).

My partner and I are going to invite his cousin and her husband if that's o.k., she runs a restaurant in Paris and could give us some suggestions on where to eat if we decide to go to dinner afterwards.

How does all this sound?

Thurs 11/27, Pont de l'Alma at 5:30PM sounds great to me! And AFAIC, the more the merrier. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

And Vulcan, come on down! While I certainly wouldn't call this a "Do", it seems to be turning into a "Gathering" instead of just a "Meeting".

I have just confirmed my "free" BF seat on CO, Arriving early on the 27th and retruning home on the 29th.

I would prefer the 5:30 on the 27th at the Pont D'Alma as well, to get over a little jet lag. But I could switch to earlier if needed.
Lets keep this thread going.

OK, so by my calculation we have the following for Thurs 11/27 at 5:30 pm at Pont de l'Alma

Confirmed:
DEK + 3
SeeYa
SFOLIS
Vulcan

Possible:
SGT Clair + fiance

Plus, I know there are other FlyerTalkers in Paris at this time. Anyone else want to join us?

Well my trip to Paris got postponed for a couple of weeks. On one hand, I feel bad that I can't follow up on my promise. But on the other hand, this little topic may lead to several Flyertalkers having a little more fun in Paris than they had bargained for. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

Enjoy Paris!

Right you are. I will continue lurking this thread to see what transpires. We will not arrive until 11/28 and our activities are a bit indefinite, but if something comes up here that looks very "crashable", that could happen. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif

lisamcgu Nov 21, 2003 3:54 pm

I agree holidays are a time for being with family - if you have one!

I'm almost down to only one close relative, and I didn't start off with too many to begin with, so I have always been able to take off and enjoy the holiday for other reasons i.e. the food!

Yum! Turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing and cranberry sauce (shaped like a can, w/o things) is my favorite meal. Therefore, my goal is to find the the best and the most of it during this holiday : o ) <- oink face

And 4th of July is about BBQ, baked beans and corn on the cob, and Easter is about Ham and Yams, and St. Patrick's Day is about Corned Beef and Cabbage, and ... ooh, I have to stop, MMIW.

Just wanted to say that I'll see everyone at the Pont de l'Alma at 5:30PM Thurs. I'll be wearing a lanyard with a flyertalk luggage tag attached to it (we'll show those Parisians what fashion is all about http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif ) Plus there are some pictures with me in them here. These are from the Flyertalk London Do in Feb. No comment on the one of me with the napkin thingy on my head, it's michswiss's fault http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif.

I can neither confirm or deny our attendance. I guess "possible" is our status. I think she wants to keep her vacation (My secret MR) as unscheduled as possible. I hope to see you all though. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

DEK Dec 1, 2003 6:32 am

Had a great time with SeeYa and Vulcan on Thursday. The bateaux mouche ride and dinner after at Bistro Romain in Place de Clichy was fun. (Apologies to Vulcan for kinda leaving him to fend for himself with all the french speakers at his end of the table, should have had you switch with John!)

Did either of you find the restaurant L'Alivi next day?

Have met so many nice people through Flyertalk, batting average is 100%!

Alysia Dec 1, 2003 8:02 am

Dale,

I recruited my friends that I spent Thanksgiving with to go on next year's Maine trip. When I was telling them about my fall travels, they seemed really interested in Maine. Even after I told them that basically these flyer people talk about their points and miles for the whole weekend, they still want to come. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

Vulcan Dec 1, 2003 4:46 pm

I never did get to the L'Avili. But I will definitley get there on my next trip to Paris. Thanks for picking such a good restaurant for dinner. I had a great time.

DEK, I have to agree with you. I have met so many great people thru flyertalk.
Dinner was great, even with the rapid flying french for this non-french speaker. We'll have to do that again sometime. Maybe I'll have learned new words and phrases by then other than "port" & "starboard". http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif
