Hey rwinn, I wish there was more notice. I've booked my travels through the fall. If there is one next year, please let me know. I'd love to attend a FT do in ANC!

JerseyJoe Aug 11, 2002 7:13 am

Ditto. We have friends that operate a fly-in fishing lodge in Iliamna (ILI) and would love an "excuse" to combine a Do with some serious fly fishing.

Would love to come, but unfortunately, less than 2 weeks doesn't make it that easy to get there, get organized, etc. Is it possible to set it up for another time and provide a bit more notice? Would love to see ANC!

techgirl Aug 11, 2002 4:28 pm

I would love to do this but a Friday night makes it difficult for me to get all the way up there in time without taking time off.

If you do this again, with 21-plus days notice, I would be game....

eastwest Aug 17, 2002 3:56 pm

Looks like attendance might be a bit thin! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif I should be able to escape work for a couple of hours to meet for drinks or dinner, though.

So is it just you and I, rwinn?

rwinn Aug 17, 2002 7:51 pm

That's what it looks like at this point! Seat 2A had mentioned something about the possibility of being in town... Maybe we'll have a huge rush at the last minute...

In any event, it would be good to grab a bite and hang out with you for awhile.

I'd love to come to an ancrorage do, but like others, am already booked well into the fall. Any chance of setting something up later on when you can see the Northern lights? This would be awesome.

Seat 2A Aug 19, 2002 12:52 pm

Seat 2A would love to join y'all down south but alas, Friday evening I will be 250 miles to the north, returning 40 some odd of our nation's finest from another fine day in Denali National Park.

Great animal day yesterday on the 1030am Eielson run! 11 grizzlies, oodles of caribou, a mess of Dall sheep, 1 porcupine and 1 cow moose. Oh yes, three arctic ground squirrels as well. Not bad for an otherwise cold and rainy day. The 3:00pm Toklat run beckons this afternoon...

Seeing as how it's just eastwest and myself, we might have some flexibility to pick a another day if that would work out for you.

I'm here (ANC) until Sunday, so let me know if there's another day that works for you.

Hey, it turns out that I will be in ANC this Friday as well. I get in pretty late - around 11:15pm I think (the UA ORD-ANC flight) and then I'm headed back out on the 12:45am UA ANC-SEA flight Sunday morning.

Are you guys up for doing something late Friday or can we make it Saturday night??

I'm totally flexible, a reasonable time on Saturday might work better tnan super late on Friday..... What works best for you eastwest?

How about a Anchorage TODO during Rondi?
Lots going on and a good reason to party!
Besides, -10 will keep the faint hearted away so the hard core can really party.

Ouch -- just saw where UA will eliminate their winter ANC service as part of service cuts. Maybe AS will comp me?

Two questions:

1) Where did you see/here this?

2) If it's true, from all cities to ANC, or just some cities?

I have to go into the office for a while on Saturday, but I can escape for a long lunch. If that sounds good to everyone, then make it so, rwinn! :-) If JSD (or anyone else) needs a ride, let me know and we can arrange something.)

eastwest Aug 20, 2002 9:51 pm

On a different note, there seems to be some interest in a Fur Rondy or Iditarod event. I'll look at some dates and perhaps we can get something in the works . . .

JSD Aug 21, 2002 12:11 am

If it works for you guys, lets get together on Saturday. I don't have any plans, so I'm up for just about anything. I'd recommend that we meet for beers in the late afternoon and then adjourn to dinner somewhere, but I'm totally flexible. I just need to get back to airport around 11pm Sat night to catch my flight.

eastwest, as a native, do you have any recommendations for what to do with only 1 day in ANC? Its my first time in the city - I'll be staying at the Sheraton, which I assume is somewhere near downtown. I'll probably rent a car - are there any short driving trips around the city that are worthwhile? Any interesting areas within the city that you would recommend?

Yep, the Sheraton is downtown. I know you addressed this to eastwest.. but here are a few suggestions:

1. The Alaska Native Heritage Center - http://www.alaskanative.net/
(Not far from downtown)

2. Museuem of History and Art - http://www.anchoragemuseum.org/
(In downtown)

3. Alaska Aviation Heritage Museum - http://home.gci.net/~aahm/
(Near the airport)

4. Public Lands Information Center - http://www.nps.gov/aplic/about_us/aaplic.html
(In downtown)

5. Eklutna Village - http://www.alaskaone.com/eklutna/
(About a half hour north of Anchorage)

Also, if you were going to have another day (or if you dared sacrafice the Mini-Do!) you could go on the 26 Glacier Cruise from Whittier, about 60 miles south of Anchorage by train or car.

I have a feeling that they would love to comp you. Hey, where is Spencer, IN? I'm based in South Bend for the the time being...

mymiles2go: I read about it in an Aviation Now article at http://www.aviationnow.com/avnow/new...s/caul0819.xml

The article says it's their normal seasonal elimination of the flights between ORD and ANC.

But. . .what about a do for the "rest of us" who are willing to travel north this year?

Like many others above I'd like to get to ANC again, but really need more notice. Met rwinn (and Jerry A.Laska!) last weekend, and have always wanted to buy eastwest a drink or three, so will make it there again for sure. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/biggrin.gif

Re ANC Sheraton, stayed there last 2 times, and my only word of warning is that it is NOWHERE near anything else "downtown" if you have no car, so be mindful of that, and IIRC cab prices mount up darn quickly due to distances. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/frown.gif

Someone on chat recently (MissyDarling maybe?) mentioned that there is a NW/AS award that allowed travel within USA including [it appeared] the connecting flight from ANC to Prudhoe Bay which I always wanted to visit and the "stopover" would be ANC. Visited Barrow once, and that was interesting. Have a lot of NW points - does anyone know if that award works that way? IIRC it was c40-50K in First.

Thanks for the warning... I was debating whether or not to get a car and this pretty much made up my mind for me.

GeneCMH Aug 22, 2002 10:44 am

Hey Guys,

I'll be in ANC for the weekend of 8/30 - 9/2. My first time there, really looking forward to it. Will be staying at the Sheraton.

Middle_Seat Aug 23, 2002 7:34 pm

If anyone, like me, is unfamiliar with Fur Rondy, here is the link: http://www.furrondy.net/

Logical, isn't it?

Middle_Seat Feb 14, 2003 5:14 pm

According to my source, the start of the Iditarod has been changed to March 2 and the location moved from Anchorage to Fairbanks...all due to lack of snow. In fact, a few days ago it was 33 (ABOVE) in FAI. Reportedly, all hotels/motels in FAI are fully booked for Iditarod.

I have long-standing plans to be there during that time for aurora viewing, and am very excited at the unexpected chance to see the Iditarod start. However, I'm scheduled to arrive at 1:30 AM and am wondering if my cheapo motel might rent out my room, in spite of its being guaranteed with credit card. Is this a reasonable concern? Any chance my rental car might similarly disappear?

I'd rather not spend the night sleeping in the snow.

According to today's Fairbanks newspaper, the Iditarod is now scheduled to begin Monday, March 3, a day later than earlier reports.
