Suggestions for a newbie please??!!

Hi all,
I am new to this board and am not sure if I'm posting this question in the right place. If not, let me know and I'll post wherever I'm told to!!
Anyway, I'm not an FF member with anyone right now, no membership numbers of any sort with hotels, car companies, etc.
Here's my deal, I'm taking my husband and 2 children from Atlanta to Auckland New Zealand in December to visit my mom's family.
I'm flying Air New Zealand(buying the tickets next week). We'll be flying a couple of segments while in NZ as well.
I guess my best bet is to sign up with United for the points, right?? Who does UA have agreements with hotel-wise for using points later since it's unlikely I'll fly UA anytime in the future. Also, should I pay with any specific credit card for points?? Does each family member need to get their own FF number?(I'm assuming so, but just checking)
Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance,
Annette

Welcome to FT!!

The community forum (this one) is mostly for planning get togethers, and the occasional birthday wish. If you want some United Specific answers, you might try posting your question in the United forum.

Hi there .. or Air NZ also has its own Forum, but for a US resident, UA points sound a better bet I imagine in terms of usefulness.

Supplement your points with 15,000 UA points for getting their VISA card - see www.ual.com for info. Then you will surely have a free ticket on United.

Thanks all for the great suggestions,
I am a travel agent (believe it or not) but I'm just getting back to work after 7 years at home with kids.
Things have changed drastically (you mean you can re-issue a non refundable ticket, doesn't that contradict the term non-refundable??!!).
Anyway, I'm starting over and really enjoying getting back into the industry, but have alot to re-learn.
Thanks again,
Annette
