Does Anyone Else Find This as Offensive as I Do?

Please have a look at:

http://www.flyertalk.com/travel/fttr.../000039-4.html

I grew up in Miami. My Mom lives in a condo and is a member of the association. You do the math. I find the content in this thread utterly despicable.

I prefer to handle this sort of thing by private e-mail, but my three attempts to be polite and discrete failed in this case. So I've decided to be not so discrete.

UAPremierExec Aug 21, 2002 7:00 pm

why? because I emailed a moderator to strike the entire threads? It's hard to delete a thread if someone uses the "reply" option and includes it in the text.

Maybe your mom is one of the people that likes to tell ME what I can and can't do in the privacy of my own home.

The above remark speaks for itself. Execrable.

I'm with David on this one. I see now that Nate has done some editing, but I find the whole thing offensive.

dhammer53 Aug 21, 2002 10:48 pm

I didn't see the original, but I have to say that I'm disappointed in you UAPremierExec.

Just reading the remnants of what's left leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

And I'll take it a step further; since this was posted in the GLBT forum, I'd just assume there would be a little more sensitivity. I guess that I expect too much.

Wendy and Dan, whom I have both met and really respect, only begin to sum up the disgust I have for this. Nate, this is not the first time you have written anti-Semitic remarks on FT. Your views are certainly known to me and others who may recall these remarks. For someone who may also be discriminated against for his beliefs/choices, I find this even more repulsive. Grow up. Think before you push the "send" button. And believe me, although I am Jewish, I am also speaking about the other xenopobic and racial remarks about which I read. Utterly disgusting.

I am curious to know the departed comments. A pvt email would be appropriate as they have already been deleted.

Had posted a question about how the moving colour images are possible in indexed thread above, but will ask it direct to FT staff to help keep this on-topic.

EastBay1K, I was poking fun at the territorial and condo "fights" that errupt between older "certain religious" type women and people who left a small island south of Florida.

I figured it's ok to joke around about it since my friends who are "of that religion" and from "that island" always do down here. But it's a very regional joke and would probably not be understood in California or New York.

Maybe next time I do any sort of "reference" to that I should type out a 15 page disclaimer for those who aren't familiar w/ the terms used or how they are using it.

Fyi, i'm not anti-jew or anti-cuban. I am, however, against people who stick their noses in MY business, and I am not a fan of the Castro Regime.

This all became an issue when I told david i would NOT delete my post because I had asked a moderator to do it. Another FTer followed my post with the original text, so even if I *did* delete my post, the text would still be intact, which is my logic for asking a moderator to strike the comments, which was done.

I see. I think it's beyond probably, and the "joke" itself was/is pretty dubious. Making disparaging remarks about people of a given origin/religion does not rank very high on the comedy scale.

Sometimes one digs a hole for oneself. And trying to dig your way out usually doesn't help resolve the problem.

At this point I don't think there's really anybody who's really a "fan" of the Castro regime. In my two trips to Cuba I certainly didn't encounter many people who were. The issue seems to revolve rather on how to best deal with the regime, and how to address growing poverty.

You could have taken the high road and edited offensive remarks when asked (nicely I would guess knowing dgolds,) rather than hide behind the lame "but someone else quoted me" excuse. Instead your indifference has only served to make something that could have been dealt with quickly.

Did you consider editing your posts and emailing the person that quoted you, pointing this out and asking that they too edit the quoted remarks? A little less conversation...

Randy Petersen Aug 22, 2002 8:16 am

I've looked in to this and it seems all the remarks have been edited and I have no direct knowledge of what was said - other than I have to agree with dgolds and the others if indeed the remarks were offensive and it seems they were. I don't have to have seen them to see their impact on our community. I'll deal directly with members involved in this and let this serve as yet another reminder: IF you think that FlyerTalk is far too large for comments that insult the ethnic, religion and other political views of members to matter or be detected, then you and I will have a very short discussion in where your next place on the Internet will be - since I can tell you it won't be here. This message should be simple to understand: Stay on the topic of travel.

Thanks dgolds and others for your concern and let me turn to that right now.

Comedy and humor are all about timing, location and the situation. When you tell what you thought was a funny event to others, and no one laughs, you say, "well, I guess you just had to be there."

The difference between comedy and tragedy is time. Somehow the joke, "So, other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, how was the play?" is okay. (The reference to Mrs. Lincoln witnessing the assasination of her husband President Lincoln at the theater.) But it is still too soon for anyone to say, "So, other than that, Mrs. Kennedy, how was the trip?"

I was glad to see the remarks finally edited.
