Could just be a newbie who is baffled by technology. While it isn't terribly clever, it may not be a deliberate attempt at trolling.

WARNING: Dumb Question

What is trolling and why do it?

Just checked and that person is up to 22 posts in a day!

JonNYC Aug 1, 2002 12:34 pm

Airliners.net, thanks again! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/rolleyes.gif

Funny thing is, my current least-favorite, most prolific, FT-troll inhabits the Starwood Forum with some frequency... I wonder...

UAPremierExec Aug 1, 2002 12:37 pm

that's all we need here, are the arm chair CEOs from airliners.net, or airwhiners as we call it :P

Canista Aug 1, 2002 1:26 pm

I think Matthew might be right - I can't see the point. It's not trolling per say, it's just mildly annoying. In the St Regis thread there is even an amusing double act.

Maybe he/she thinks that making a post is a way to agree with a topic? http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/rolleyes.gif If it’s deliberate it’s quite easy for FT admin to ban the source IP.

Anyway... here's to enjoying the soon to arrive week-end http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/biggrin.gif

I pulled together a definition of 'trolling' a while back. You can find it here.

Thanks Shareholder and a few others. A look into this did result in a few unusal items such as identical IP addresses with another member. As a result, both members have been asked to explain this sudden and overenergetic interest in FlyerTalk. So, if you notice a regular around here that seems to be taking a 'vacation' for the next few weeks, you'll know that Gotham City is safe again.

I didn't know what trolling was either, but thanks for the explanation and the reference to the thread which explained it, and gave me, per MatthewClement's post, a resonable explanation for what I felt was wrong with the way certain posters posted.

"Trolls generate an intelligence drain - when a troll wreaks havoc in the group, all discussion will become less intelligent.
Self-explanatory. When the things get heated, people concentrate on flaming, and flaming is about mindless ranting and raving. Who cares about logic or intelligence."

This goes along with what I have said so often: If you have to lie (or change the subject, or act just plain stupid and offensive) to make your point, you don't have one.

Thanks again for explanation.

Now I have to keep a close eye out to see if it's whom I thought it was! The suspense is killing me.

Intriguing.

Maybe the only reason I'm posting here is to prove I'm not one of the ones who wigged-out. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

MikeFly Aug 1, 2002 9:54 pm

Thanks Matthew - Although I understand your reasons of why they do it - I still don't get it. Again just raised raised wrong http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

I was starting to think that jonNYC was pickin on him!
thanks for the explanation.

Nah Tinkybelle you'd know from the bruises. I seem to recall JonNYC offered to visit one of his other discoveries in Coupon Connection with a baseball bat unless he coughed up the promised certs. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif

As anyone who frequents the BA Board will know Trolling is what our Cabin Crew do on their days off, and sometimes down the aisle as well as long as

1) They fancy the passenger

2) They fancy that I am not looking.

JonNYC -

Does Randy issue either badges or bats to the FT CPO's (Coupon Police Officers)?

Seriously, you provide valuable assistance to people who have been cheated out of coupons. Don't let a few trolls wear you down!

Actually eMailman, I menat the male crew members as anyone who has flown us will testify.

Still, if you are interested, I probably could organise about 100 such Trolls for you if I can claim total immunity for any charges of importuning!!

eMailman Aug 6, 2002 8:07 am

Never mind http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif And I still have my EC blue card. My claim to fame is the most flights on BA without earning a point or a mile....

I guess we'll have to continue guessing...
