Ok, I'm a maybe for this event. A listing was posted at work stating they are expecting the Hard Rock Cafe in PIT to be open on June 24. If the date doesn't change there's a good chance I'll be there http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

Just scored the Omni William Penn dahntahn for a $45 bid on Priceline (failed previously at $44; total charge $57.25). http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

Thanks, just got it myself, but for only $40 since there is $5 in bonus money available right now, but only until tomorrow night (4/24/02) for anyone else who wants to take advantage of this deal (my price was $52.25 total, including fees and taxes).

Here's the link for the Bonus Money: http://www.amazing-bargains.com/j/priceline-8050.html

pitflyer Apr 23, 2002 8:32 am

I am reasonably (99%) sure that the ONLY four star in Pittsburgh (in Priceline) is the Westin William Penn. So if you want this hotel for $40 you can almost definitely get it if you use Priceline. Just for those considering it. And at $45.95 ($40 for the htoel, $5.95 for Priceline) it's a steal.

What the heck are you talking about my Big Mac eating friend?

Westin William Penn = Omni William Penn

You're right about the $40/night, but you need to use the bonus money to get that price.

I believe that it's the only 4* that has been seen over at BFT come up on Priceline, so just bid 4* in downtown at $40 + $5 bonus of $45 with no bonus and you should get it.

Frequent Freak Apr 23, 2002 10:19 am

Aaarrrrgggh! Yesterday I started working Priceline for my various summer ballpark runs. I get filled in a couple of places only to have the bonus pop up this morning. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/frown.gif

Some of us remember when it was just the plain old William Penn.

pitflyer Apr 23, 2002 10:23 am

That's what I meant. It's the William Penn. Westin, Omni, whatever http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif I just wanted to confuse people between the Westin Convention Center and the Omni William Penn and you foiled my dastardly plan.. argh!

Here's some good information on the hotel (besides what can be found at OmniWilliamPenn.com)

TOOLMAN Apr 25, 2002 3:10 pm

Thank You Frequent Freak and all for the Priceline tip. I was planning on an award stay at the Hilton, but was somewhat concerned with the blah feedback on the Hilton board for that property. Best comment I remember is that it was "OK". I got the Omni at $45 instead. It appears that one can walk across the river to the ballpark. Does anyone know? thanks
Oh yeah, see you there!

pitflyer Apr 25, 2002 7:30 pm

Yes, you want to walk across the Roberto Clemente (Sixth Street) bridge to the park. I believe on game days on the weekends that bridge is closed to traffic, so the whole bridge is open to people only.

Frequent Freak Apr 25, 2002 9:06 pm

If you really want to save on parking and don't mind walking, you can park on Mount Washington, take the Mon Incline down and walk across the Smithfield Street Bridge. This has the added attraction of avoiding whatever PennDOT is doing with the Fort Pitt Tunnel this week.

(You can also do the "park on the other side of the river for free and walk across a cool old bridge" thing in Cincinnati, but I wouldn't try it in St. Louis.)

BillMorrow May 7, 2002 7:17 am

Hi all. Sorry for the delay in posting this information, but work and travel seem to be getting in the way these days.

As I mentioned previously, I have purchased (and have in hand) 20 tickets to the game on June 22nd.

Ticket cost is $27/seat. You can pay via PayPal or by sending a check to me. If you want to pay via PayPal, use the address in the email icon above(didn't want to post it in the body of a message). If you wish to pay by check, please send me an email for the address. If you are paying by check, please note that I will be away 5/20-6/2 and won't be able to collect my mail. Any tix paid by check during that time won't be mailed until after I come back. If you do pay by PayPal during that time, I will have the tix with me and get them right out.

Ideally, I would like to have all the payments in by June 3rd. If this is a problem, let me know and I try to work out something.

It looks like some good rates at the Omni WP! For this interested in using their W14's at the Renaissance, there is still award availability for 6/21-6/23. Note that the Renaissance was routinely selling out last summer on Saturday game nights.

Does any have ideas for get togethers outside of the game itself? Several ideas were mentioned earlier, but we probably should start some planning.

pitflyer May 7, 2002 7:56 am

Bill, I haven't decided how I'll pay, but email me your address in case I pay by check (or I'll ask you later).

Here's something else going on that weekend at the airport:

http://www.wingsoverpittsburgh.com/

It's the military air show that happens every year (third year now) on airport grounds. The website doesn't have a lot of details yet. If you are are arriving or leaving PIT that Sat or Sun you will probably see them as you land/take-off.

Other options are Andy Warhol museum (very close to PNC Park) and any of the other museums scattered around downtown and the north shore.

Beckles May 7, 2002 8:15 am

Thanks Bill, just PayPaled you $28.12 (the extra $1.12 for the PayPal fees I know they extort, errr, charge, so you should end up with $27.00).

BillMorrow May 17, 2002 7:00 pm

Hmmm... attempts to get booked that Friday at an area client didn't work.

I'm afraid that barring a really cheap last minute deal, I'm a no go for this one.

GO RANGERS!!!! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/biggrin.gif

WOO HOO! Does that mean you are coming to see me soon? I'll ice down the Shiner....

Beckles May 29, 2002 8:23 am

Are there any good public transit options from the airport to downtown, or should I rent a car?

To be fair, the Airport Transportation -- 28X express bus right from the airport to downtown -- is a good deal at $2 each way. There also is a special bypass that buses take, and depending on when you come in it can save 15-20 minutes or more.

Another event going on at the same time is the Three Rivers Arts Festival -- http://www.artsfestival.net/ . I've gone every year for several years and always find it enjoyable. It's downtown so you can easily hit it if going to the event.

Combined with the game, meeting Flyertalkers, Wings Over Pittsburgh, I hope others of you on the fence will come to attend. It should be a great time.

BillMorrow May 30, 2002 4:26 am

Speaking of those on the fence, I still have 9 tickets left for the baseball game.

I knew I could count on pitdgflyer1 to know the cheapest way ...

TOOLMAN May 30, 2002 10:24 am

Got Hertz Priceline for $22. The Rangers actually won a game last night. The Pirates charged their own mound the other day(or something like that). My new Rangers shirt is ready. This will be FUN.

I'd have to pay to get it out of the parking lot though ... of course, if I'm stealing a car, I might as well just drive through the fence to avoid paying parking while I'm at it ... I'm sure in the end that would be much cheaper than the bus, especially when you count the 3 hots and a cot the State of Pennsylvania would provide for 6-12 months for free. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

BTW I'm thinking I'll probably go to this on Sunday ... anyone else interested in going?

pitflyer May 30, 2002 3:21 pm

I might end up overnighting in downtown Saturday night, and if that was the case, I would also go on Sunday. I'll let you know at the game.

Wow, I'm actually going to meet USAirways fliers (I met chexfan, but now he's <blech> a United flier) ... so what will be the crisis by the time we all get together? http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

BillMorrow Jun 14, 2002 6:18 am

First, I still have some baseball tix left for Saturday night. If anyone wants some more, please speak up quickly before I start passing them out to the in-laws and the out-laws.

There are only going to be about 10 of us there. The event didn't turn out to be as popular I thought it would. Perhaps it was too many baseball gatherings or folks don't know a nice city PIT is.

In any case, it will be a fun weekend. There's lots going on with the Pittsburgh Air Show on Saturday and Sunday. Also, the Three Rivers Arts Festival starts this weekend and ends June 23rd. There is plenty of art on display and lots of free music. Leon Redbone is giving a freebee concert Friday evening (6/22) in Point State Park at 7pm.

Does anyone want to get together for a drink Friday evening?

We are arriving in PIT at 5pm and will be renting a car. If anyone is arriving in the same general time period, let me know and I'll give you a ride in.

Also, who all is staying where? I know some folks are at the Wm Penn and we are at the Renaissance both nights.

US Airways ESavers to PIT this weekend:

ATL $118
BWI $118
GSP $138
ORF $108

Hmmm ... that's it this weekend ... slow weekend for ESavers.

Mmmm .... Ribs ... Ninth Annual Rib America Festival is this weekend too. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

TribeFlyer Jun 21, 2002 6:53 am

BillMorrow,

Could you please post an updated attendee list? (the one on the website is out of date)

BillMorrow Jun 22, 2002 2:23 pm

Sorry, I didn't do a very good job on the site:

This is the list (from memory):
TribeFlyer
ClueByFour
Frequent Freak
Pitflyer & Mrs Pitflyer
Applefan
Toolman
Beckles
BillMorrow & Karen

pitflyer Jun 22, 2002 9:51 pm

ClueByFour wasn't in town, so it was a small get-together. But I enjoyed meeting everyone else (and re-meeting TribeFlyer) and it was a good time, even though one bad team was playing another bad team...

TOOLMAN Jun 24, 2002 8:46 am

Hello BillMorrow, TribeFlyer, Applefan, Beckles, PitFlyer, and Frequent Freak. I enjoyed meeting all of you. Best I could tell, a fun time was had by all; even the Pirates fans. Appears the Rangers finally someone that they could beat. Special thanks to BillMorrow for putting this together. I still owe you a beer.
