A Taste of Toronto during the DIE
 

DIE = DO IN EXILE, Toronto, July 26-28 2002.

First off: Kudos to B747, San Diego 1K, Guy Betsy and everyone who is putting together an awesome event.

I plan to spend Saturday afternoon getting "A Taste of Toronto:" which will hopefully include:

*A visit to the Top of the CN Tower
*Walking along King St and maybe Yonge Street
*visit to the Skydome (it's a nice tour.. been on that.)
*Light early lunch somewhere... maybe Tim Hortons? (HINT HINT!)
*Anything else you are interested in. (there's even a brewery called the Steam Whistler. We can raise a toast to those at "that OTHER event" on the west coast. ;-))

Wanted to take some of the work off the organizers. And it gives me an excuse to walk off all those traveling calories.

If anyone's interested just post here. Again, it's an open ended tour so just come and enjoy.

How about you throw the CBC tour in there, Catman, and maybe Dim Sum in Chinatown if there's time.

That all could work markbach.

Maybe we can do dim sum in chinatown for lunch and those who want can go to the CBC for a tour.

I have seen the CBC and it's a nice tour.

Oh, this sounds like fun! Catman, thanks so much for suggesting it, and add me to the list.

And Catman, should we start mid morning for maple glazed doughnuts (or the sweet of your choice) at Tim Hortons? If that's all we get, then we can have the dim sum that markbach wants a couple hours later after some walking - an idea, by the way, that I wholeheartedly endorse. Dim sum is ONLY fun in a group.

CatmanWalk along Queen Street West between University and Bathurst before you walk along King Street West IMHO. Waaaayyy more interesting. Or for a long interesting walk go north on Yonge to Bloor Street then west on Bloor to about Ossington. Make sure you check out the BATA SHOE MUSEUM on Bloor West as it is one of the most interesting, odd museums I know! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

We can plan this out along the way but as I said everyoen can go off and do their own thing.

Tim Hortons in the mid morning sounds good becuase I am ready to finally eat my first Tim Hortons.

Edmonton... you are right on Queen Street. Brain dead moments. Sorry.

Since I have a Tim Horton's on the street level of the building in which I live, does this mean I should attempt to smuggle a box of TIMBITS into the USA next Thursday when I come down to NYC, Catman?

We could do a real taste test by going out to Mississauga where Canada's first Krispy Kreme is located, and pit Tim against Krispy...

How difficult would it be to get to Mississauga from where we are?

Mmmm... fresh Tim Horton's Canadian Maple donuts... the only donut better than a KK glazed.

Sometimes we Canadians aren't very smart. I've got 4 Tim Horton's within a 5 minute drive of my house, but will still line up for half an hour at the Krispy Kreme when coming back from the airport. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/rolleyes.gif

Catman, we'd need to rent a car, though I am sure one of the locals would be happy to give us a lift out there [it's by the airport, as alluded to above] since there is no need to be a designated driver for this type of tasting. I have always lived in the core of cities, so never owned a car. Guess that's how I can afford all the flying I do.

yyzflyer's comment could be used by me as an excuse should there only be a couple left in the box by the time we meet for drinks on Thursday, but I shall give it a go. [Hmmm, might be safer from inspection if I put the box in my checked baggage.]

It's too far to consider as you'll burn up a couple of hours or more depending on traffic and including the KK line-up to go there and back. It's farther away from downtown than the airport (it is west and south of Pearson).

Pig-out on Tim Horton's instead. BTW, the Apple Fritter is one of the biggest sellers!

I don't understand why they didn't go and put that KK smack in the middle of downtown.

One word: Lineups.

The first 3 months it was open (winter) they actually constructed a heated tent to contain some of the walk-in lineup. The drive-through lineup stretched over a city block and was controlled by no less than 3 Mississauga Police officers. Where else but a semi-deserted commercial parking lot in the 'burbs could you do this without creating traffic chaos? BTW there's a new one opening soon in Richmond Hill (north end), but it's getting a lot of bad press locally because of the lineups and traffic mess expected.

I believe it has to do with franchising territory. KK Corporate wanted to reserve downtown for themselves and only awarded the master franchises for the suburbs. AFAIK, there will be a second location in Scarborough soon, but I don't know the details.

Friends, lets scratch the KK/Tim Horton's taste test. THe only way would be if I bring in some from NYC, but they might be as fresh.

We have enough to do during the DIE to keep us busy. Maybe next time. Thanks for the warning on the drive

And YES, why not put a KK in downtown Toronto! It will be one of the biggest stories (Tim Vs Krispy) in years.

That was my point, a downtown KK wouldn't have the street traffic problems that the one in Missisaugua has.

No big deal, I'm sure there'll be quite a few in good time.

Just want to update:

*Will not do any drive outside YYZ for Krispy Kreame.
*BUT I am looking forward to trying Tim Hortons.
