Bye Bye "ONLY RANDY PETERSEN" and "OMNI" too - Yep at least for now!

OMNI narrows clickability...

Only Randy Petersen....takes a break

http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/Forum75/HTML/000031.html

FWIW, this fantastic board once already went "offline" a few years ago due to intense sniping.

Another related travel board, PlaneBusiness, also imploded recently for essentially the same sad reason.

And as I noted in another thread, at the "PPRuNe Bulletin Board", they have also adopted more "restrictive" guidelines to keep their site focused!

http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/Forum73/HTML/000204.html

Perhaps this will actually help us to ALL better focus on "miles and points? and enjoy the boards main "thrust!"

I'm disappointed that there was no advance warning that OMNI would be taken away. OMNI let us read the news and see how FT'ers responded to it.

Under the new rules, the non-travel messages like the ones we enjoyed (and sometimes were angered or baffled by) will have no place to go on FlyerTalk. I think it's a loss to the community.

But it wasn't taken away!

You can still connect to the same OMNI Forum through the Flyertalk Travel Board.

Sounds like if we were to add MilesBuzz to the list, we would start to get somewhere.

I can still access the Randy Petersen board HERE.

The last message seems to been around 5.30pm from Lisa at Webflyer posting a simple "test" on the "WHERE ARE THE MODERATORS????!!!!!!!" thread. Not sure if one is able/permitted to post anymore - did not try.

I never understood why "OMNI" existed to be honest. Just seems to be a hot bed of fights and controversy all the time, and was very seldom related to travel. No loss IMO.

I figure all that will happen is the forums will be pulled for a while to allow some type of cooling off period...which will likely not solve anything. Maybe specific threads will even be trashed...wiping out the TOS violations that likely won't be acted upon.

If I am wrong then I will be happy.

I agree. It was fun to be able to see threads about what book folks are reading, what CD they're listening to, which airports they'd been to, etc.,etc. If the topic wasn't something I was interested in, I didn't read it. What I did find fascinating about Omni was the fact that for the most part, there are some pretty interesting people on FT who have lives and interests and expertise outside of travel. It was fun and educational, sometimes, to be able to pick each other's brains, have a kind of roundtable of quick expertise on non-travel topics from thoughtful folks, etc.

Of late, you're absolutely right. I don't blame Randy for pulling the two fora. It was especially disheartening to see some folks who I have respected in the past (and a couple who I haven't) make such a mess in the last few days as guests in someone else's home. I wouldn't blame Randy if he pulled the plug on FT entirely; it can't add to his bottom line very much and probably has compounded the aggravation level for him and his staff in the last few days exponentially.

Based upon the actions of the FT management, it does not appear that MilesBuzz is intended to be a substitute for the "Randy" forum or "Omni".
