I've carried a copy of DL's Rule 240 for at least 2 years. Had to use it twice, and boy were they surprised when I pulled it out. I'm not sure it didn't get me a line or two in my record on DL's computer, but it sure was effective...

brentski and cblaisd, thanks for the links. Very informative - I'll be sure to carry them from now on! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

Great thread with valuable information... Thanks!!

UA*AA May 12, 2001 4:10 pm

Thanks for the information.

I find it interesting that AA and UA consider work stoppages and strikes to fall under the same catagory, Force Majure Events, the same as act's of God.

May the Force Majure be with you.... http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif

I tried rule 40 when my IAD-LHR united flight got delayed. They put me in Virgin upper class! Bravo

The next best thing to writing the rules is knowing them.

GG May 15, 2001 8:08 am

I just referred a newcomer to this topic... http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/redface.gif

brentski, I sure don't see anything about Rule 240 when I click on your link. Maybe you could update it?

doc, your first two links are similarly outdated. The relevant link in your third posted link here is from JerryFF in that topic, and to save having to go to 2 more places, I'm gonna post it here:
http://www.mytravelrights.com

cblaisd's link still works.

Hope this helps keep things current. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

When you click on the link; http://extratv.warnerbros.com/

go to news archives for the date,5/09 and you'll find the link to rule 240 as well as links as it applies to each airline. You can print those out to have in your travels.

GG,
When you access the XtraTV link, just do a search (top right) for "rule 240". You will be taken to a page where you can read each airlines version of the rule.
Can't seem to get the MyTravelRights link to work, though.

AAAAAaaaaargh,
so much for posting a reply without reading all the posts first.

I find it interesting that the airlines all disclaim: "shortage of labor or fuel" as not their fault, and not covered under 240.

I spent an hour on the tarmac last night while a substitute copilot drove to the airport and signed in. I hardly consider that outside the control of the airline (in this case, AA) and am even more annoyed that they would make us all get on the plane and wait knowing that the copilot isn't even on his way to the airport yet...

I did not see a link for Alaska airlines. any idea why? Do they not have a rule 240?

brentski Jun 4, 2001 8:39 pm

Good question. You may have to write to Alaska Air and ask them to send you a copy of 'their' 240 rule.

By the way, you can find rule 240 by clicking on the Archives in the upper left, and then going to the date,5-26 to find it.

I reviewed the links and did not see any mention of international (non-US) airlines. Does anyone know if airlines such as Lufthansa also have a similar rule?

Thanks
Ron
