New Jersey on April 6

Catman and I are hooking up for dinner on Friday, April 6 and all are invited. We'll probably meet first at the Embassy Suites in Parsippany and then venture out to dine somewhere nearby such as Don Pepe's, SageBrush or any other suitable dining establishment.

I would also love to give Forno's another try over that weekend (Saturday or Sunday), especially given the fact that so many people couldn't attend last time and they wouldn't let us in. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/frown.gif I have booked a room on Saturday at the EWR Hilton, just in case we can put something together.

Sounds good! Hope to make it! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

RichG Mar 14, 2001 9:06 pm

I almost was going to have to be in Morris Plains that night, but it turns out that I'll be in Eatontown instead. However, if you come up with something for Saturday, let me know.

motnot Mar 14, 2001 10:51 pm

I might be able to make it. I'm busy in the city until that day, and I'm not sure of my schedule at that point. But I'm going to try!

doc Mar 27, 2001 11:42 am

Seems, sadly, that I may be leaving town early on the 6th but will soon know more! Naturally, I'll let you know! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

Two nights in a row? http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

I could try to make one, but not both.

Efrem Mar 27, 2001 12:00 pm

There are some things that two nights in a row isn't too often for. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif

Aren't FF dinners one of them? http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

LarryU Mar 29, 2001 7:01 pm

Now that I am back in PDX and staying put for a few days, I just wanted to take stock of who can party next week and which day would be best. If you can make it one day and not the other, I would suggest trying for Saturday near EWR. If nobody can make it on Friday, then Catman and I will still hook up. We'll probably head over to SageBrush if they let us in -- the last time we were there we set the table on fire! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/eek.gif

Right now, the very tentative guest list is:

Friday
LarryU
Catman
Kitty Hawk
Doc ??? - will know soon
motnot ???
marchbach - which day?

Saturday
LarryU
Catman ??? -- may be able to arrive later
Kitty Hawk
Doc ??? - will know later
RichG
motnot ???
marchbach - which day?
Kitty Hawk

Also, I have a room booked at the EWR Hilton on Saturday night that includes seven days of parking. I am planning to check out on Sunday so I would think that I should be able to offer my space to anyone who could take advantage of it. Is anyone flying out of EWR on or after April 8 that needs a place to park for a few days?

motnot Mar 29, 2001 11:43 pm

I'm still unsure of my schedule. I definitely would love to make one or both of these. I will know for sure as we get closer to the date.

Vulcan Mar 30, 2001 7:13 am

I could make Saturday only.

Catman and I going to hook up on Friday afternoon and then relax/chat a while at the Embassy Suites. Is dinner at 7:00PM too late for you?

Also, we were planning to head over to SageBrush (42 oz Sam Adams for Catman http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/biggrin.gif) but, if I remember correctly, that restaurant is not on your "A" list. So, if you have other preferences, we'll happily go whereever you point us.

markbach Mar 30, 2001 10:45 pm

I'm booked at the Westin Morristown on Friday night at a $69 AAA rate. I'm confirmed at this point for Friday, and a very possible maybe for Saturday depending on how my week goes. Have we picked restaurants yet?

Right now, the restaurant choices are still open. For Saturday, my preferences are Forno's or Don Pepe's because I have dined at both and thought their food was great. However, if the group votes otherwise, I will do as I am told. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif

On Friday, the confirmed group currently consists of you, me, Catman, Kitty Hawk and nj_flyer. Catman and I were planning to go to SageBrush if nobody else showed up but now I'll just solicit preferences.

Do you have any restaurants in mind? The only constraints are that Friday's choice will be somewhere in the Parsippany/Morris Plains vicinity and Saturday will be somewhere near EWR.

For Friday, The SageBrush sounds good. I've never been there, but from Zagat's, it looks like a Tex-Mex/Steakhouse, which sounds great.

For Sat, I'm open to what you suggest, and I might not even make it, depending on what my weekend schedule looks like. My birthday is this Wednesday, the 4th, so my parents might want me home for dinner on Saturday. I'll let you know as the week progresses.

markbach Mar 31, 2001 10:57 am

Saturday is the first seder, so I definately can't come on Saturday. I still plan on coming Friday, and I'm trying to talk my dad into coming (although he probably won't).

Got room for a brit ?

I will be in New York, staying at the Waldorf (waiting for hhonors to confirm) I could change my flight to sfo to the ewr-sfo at 2.30 on Sunday though. How difficult is it ti get from NYC center to EWR ??

jongar, the more the merrier. Please check out the advice offered in the thread http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/Forum94/HTML/004325.html and then reverse it. The bottom line is that there are numerous ways of getting between midtown NYC and EWR, ranging from public transportation to private cars, depending on your desired level of inconvenience and the amount of money you wish to pay for the privilege. I did this "commute" a couple of weeks ago and opted for a middle of the road approach by using a shared door to door service, which generally prices out at $14-$16. Several companies offer this service, including Grayline, which I dislike, and Olympia, which was OK.

The details have not yet been worked out for Saturday but I will have a car so I can offer you a lift from EWR to the restaurant. Once you arrive at EWR, grab the free shuttle to the EWR Hilton (908-351-3900) and we can go to the restaurant from there. If this is of interest, lets work out the best time to meet.

An even nicer place to assemble ahead of time would be CO's wonderful President Club in terminal C, as we did last time. Are there any prospective dinner attendees who would mind bringing in a guest to the President's Club for some pre-dinner drinks? I'm buying! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/biggrin.gif

Here is the current plan:

Friday:

Catman, Kitty Hawk and I will meet at the Parsippany Embassy Suites and then head over to Arthur's, which is located right across from the Morris Plains train station. We should all try to be there by 7:00PM but they do not take reservations so if it looks crowded, whoever shows up first, ask for a nonsmoking table (i.e. upstairs) for six people. They also do not take credit cards so you will need to bring cash.

Arthur's address is 700 Speedwell Ave and free parking is available nearby (not at the train station). The phone number is 973-455-9705.

The confirmed guest list is LarryU, Catman, Kitty Hawk, markbach and nj_flyer. Doc and motnot are maybes.

Saturday:

Catman suggested we try Don Pepe's, located at 844 McCarter Highway in Newark (phone 973-623-4662). Catman will make reservations; does anyone have a preference for a specific time?

The confirmed guest list is LarryU, RichG, Vulcan, Kitty Hawk and Jongar. Catman is still working out his schedule. Other maybes include Doc and motnot. Vulcan, can the mayor come?

Jongar, let me know when you plan to check in at the EWR Hilton. I have a President's club pass so we can dash over there for cocktails, if you like.

Absolutely. Catman and I will be in the bar area by 5:30 and will hang around until a little after 6:30, before heading over to the restaurant. Kitty Hawk will be arriving by 6:15 or so. If in doubt, ask anyone at the front desk where to find me. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif

LarryU Apr 2, 2001 7:07 pm

Update for Saturday

Catman has made reservations for six at Don Pepe's at 7:00PM. This should give him enought time to get back to EWR from LI. If anyone else thinks they might be able to attend, let us know and we'll bump up the reservation accordingly.

Vulcan Apr 3, 2001 12:34 pm

I will be there alone on Saturday. It turns out that The Mayor has to go to a political "screening". Thank goodness I have a more "important" meeting to go to. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

I cancelled my hotel because I need to be back early Sat, so I'd just assume drive back Friday. I'll probably show up about 5:30-6. I assume its the standard ES layout with the bar/snacks in the Atrium?

Yep. Turn to the left after you walk past the front desk then continue walking for about five seconds; the bar area will be on your right.

Friday pre-dinner get-together change of plans

As I informed a few of you via email, I just received a letter from Embassy Suites notifying me that a craft fare is scheduled to begin there on Friday evening. My immediate response was to book a room at the Hilton. I will not subject my friends or myself to a gaggle of thousands of people who choose to spend their day searching through two entire floors of used Christmas ornaments. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/frown.gif

Based on some preliminary feedback to my initial email, here is plan B. Catman and I will hook up in the early afternoon and then meander over to SageBrush, where we will see how many 42 oz Sam Adams we can imbibe and still be able to move. So for those of you who had planned to hook with us at the hotel, you will probably find us at SageBrush by 5:30 or so; we will then head to Arthur’s by about 6:45. SageBrush's address is:

Sagebrush Steak Cantina
38 Horsehill Rd
(bet. Hanover Ave. & Ridgedale Rd.)
Cedar Knolls
201-539-3324 http://www.zagat.com/search/Details....1&PID=1&LID=42

If approaching via Rt 10 FROM 287, take the appropriate U Turn that will place you on Rt 10 eastbound. Make a left on Ridgedale Ave and then proceed to the south for about five minutes or so, past 4-5 lights. At one of the intersections, look for Horse Hill Road on your right; it may be hard to see. Make a right and then follow the road as it curves to the left. Look for SageBrush on the right after about 30 seconds or so.

I hope to see you all there; otherwise, I'll meet you at Arthur's at 7:00PM

Kitty Hawk Apr 4, 2001 12:58 pm

SageBrush, then Arthur's, it is, then.

See y'all Friday night.

Thanks, Larry.

markbach Apr 4, 2001 5:59 pm

Ok, see you at Sagebrush at 5:30ish.

motnot Apr 5, 2001 10:24 pm

Saturday's looking good for me now. Put me down as a likely. If that changes in the next day, I'll do my best to make it Friday.

I'm coming in from the city and would like to meet somewhere that I can get to without a lot of trouble with public transit. Please e-mail me with any pertinent info. Thanks.

My suggestion is that you and anyone else who does not have a car hook up with me at the EWR Hilton on Saturday afternoon. I can accommodate three passengers comfortably and four uncomfortably and drive all of the car-less people to the restaurant. I am not terribly familiar with the Newark and Elizabeth area but I will try to figure out how to get there before we set forth. I am presuming that everyone else will meet us at the restaurant by 7:00PM. If anyone plans to hook up earlier, either post here, send me an email or call me at the EWR Hilton on Saturday afternoon at 908-351-3900.

LarryU Apr 7, 2001 10:02 am

Plans for Saturday

Kitty Hawk will be meet me and Jongar at the EWR Hilton at 6:30 and then we will leave together for Don Pepe's. We can probably offer a ride to anyone else who shows up at the hotel before we leave.
