Any advice for going down under?
 

I'm trying to plan a trip to scout Australia for a possible re-location. I really don't have any idea on where I'd end up living, but it will probably be in one of the major metropolitan areas for employment. I'd like to go sometime in March for 10-14 days for scouting and some vacation. Hopefully I'll have some interviews set up by then.

I'd actually be looking to relocate 6-8 months from now (or sooner if job hunting goes well). Any suggestions for finding fares, places to stay/see/avoid, re-location advice, etc. will all be appreciated.

Best fare after a quick search is AA (Qantas code share) LAX-SYD for $940 US.

BTW, I am IT consultant/project manager if there are any Auzzie headhunters out there....

Be wary of ozstamps and tinkybelle, they are both committed Sydneyites. If you want civilty, sophistication, fine cuisine and outstanding theatre (OK Sydney has that too) then check Melbourne out. Salaries are higher in Sydney but so is the cost of living particularly real estate. You dont say what industry you are in. If it is IT I would be interested in seeing your CV. Freefaller ... if you want to do some "scouting" of the major cities remember this place is the same size as the contiguous USA. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

If you have some Qantas points you might want to do this "round the country trip" mentioned in thread below burning VERY few points to do it, or do some "gifting" deal with any of the ozzies on this thread to book it. Do I detect a Sydney - Melbourne competition here?

Seriously, both are excellent cities but you may want to also consider smaller urban centers because they generally have lower costs of living (Adelaide for example - but lousy night life - great churches and wine!!). Perth has excellent fishing, beaches, people and good connections to Asia plus a thriving engineering industry. It depends what you are looking for as you know.

I think Adelaide has great nightlife! But nothing compares to Melbourne. It's one of the worlds great cities and the citizens are very friendly.

I would avoid Sydney unless you are a New Yorker or have some key business reason to be there.
