upgrade to business elite
 

I need some advice from the vast pool of experience out there.
My wife and I want to fly to France on Delta in Sept 2001 and upgrade to business elite with our Skymiles. I called today to make the reservation and not only was the upgradeable fare double what it was in Sept of this year but amazingly enough there were no seats available for upgrade on the dates we wanted to travel. An alternative date was likewise unavailable. This is really unbelievable. I suspect that something is going on here that I dont understand, and perhaps someone out there can explain to me the optimal time to try to get reservations to Europe with Delta both as to price and upgrade using Skymiles. Thanks
