AMSTERDAM HOTELS & RESTAURANTS
Thanks to the posting on the Northwest page, I was able to get FC tickets to Amsterdam over the Thanksgiving holiday for $500.00(who needs turkey when you can have wooden shoes in First!!). I know in the past there had been some good postings on Amsterdam Hotels (Starwood, Hyatt, Marriott) would be first choice. But I can't seem to find them. As a woman traveling alone I would want something central & safe. Same goes for restaurants & sights--as I will only be there Friday & Saturday time is limited. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. (Also where can I find those old posts????)

Amsterdam Marriott on the Leidesplan is just fine and not to expensive.
BTW- Only shortcoming of the e-fare sale is that I guess you could not use a TCV that I recall you have/had. Or is there possibly a way to do this as well? Glad it worked out for you. Cheers! |
I stayed at the Marriott recently and it was pretty much a decent American style hotel. It's nearby an excellent Rijstaffel restaurant called Sama Sebo.
If you want to be in the middle of it all, try the Victoria across from the central station. My favorite is the Sheraton at the airport. |
We stayed at the Marriott and found it to be very convenient and safe. Watch out for bicyclists, though. They have the right of way all through the bike paths across the street from the hotel. We also liked the Indonesian restaurant that Stimpy mentioned. You can walk to anything just about. It is not an inspiring hotel but very nice. They gave my daughter a free Tshirt for her birthday there: "Marriott, a Dutch of Class!" See the Tropical Museum - all about the old colonies. Very interesting. We even saw a play in English at a theater less than a block from the hotel.

Sorry, computer meltdown...I would have deleted but it is no longer an option.

Doc, I wasn't going to use that voucher yet, I checked with CO and can use it there--I have lots & lots of credits from flights not taken so I used that. I just figured when was I ever going to get a rate that cheap in BC that didn't entail using any miles to upgrade. Looking at the seating chart today, it looks like my outbound on 11/25 is just about filled in BC, but my return on 11/28 is only 1/4 full-- so it appears a few others saw the ad as well.
Jerjex, that is exactly the Trip Report I was looking for, Thanks! http://talk.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif |
mauld, there is a great Italian restaurant right across the street from the Marriott in AMS. I've been trying to find the name, but can't. The food & service was great.

Hello,
I also was able to take advantage of the great rate Northwest is offering to Europe. I am very excited as this will be my first time to Europe (Amsterdam) and flying in business class. I also am travelling alone (first time for that as well). I will be staying at the Marriott. Hope to catch at least one of the art museums while i am there. If anyone has any suggestions on "must-see" items, i would appreicate it! |
The 2 must-see places I would suggest are the Van Gogh Museum and the Anne Frank House.
Enjoy... |
a very good aviation museum on the Schiphol grounds--a long and out-of-the-way walk from the terminal but definitely a good stretch-the-legs before the flight.
Stayed at the Radisson SAS last year and it was fine as well. |
Thanks to this board...I also booked the amsterdam BC flight from Newark. After booking I let the Web site guide me to the hotel area and booked the Marriott for $178.00 per night.
This months Travel & Leisure magazie has a story about Amsterdam and "stylish" places to stay and eat. I leave Thursday nite...Seat 2H and return Sunday seat 2H again...anyone else on my flight? |
What's the weather expected to be like in Amsterdam?
|
Maybe we should try and plan an amsterdam flyertalk meet for thanksgiving weekend.
I'll be there with my girlfriend, flying NW of course http://talk.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif Maybe we can even have a flyertalk party on the plane http://talk.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif |
Regretably,I won't be there. I'd like to suggest that everyone consider getting together for an Indonesian Rijstaffel dinner. With a group you can order a much greater variety of dishes and share them.
