Key West '00

I'm bringing this forward under a different heading as I was able to get a great rate in KW and there seemed to be interest for this location!

Mid to late September 2000, Key West Hilton. $99.00 rate confirmed. I'll need a weekend and a guesstimate of rooms to block. There had been some discussion earlier about a possible pip2 here. Let's discuss that after you all survive Hawaii!

I would welcome all input and any assistance that might be forthcoming in organizing whatever type of event you all decide to be appropriate.

September in Key West is sort of like right now anywhere on the East Coast. It's Hurricane season. If you don't get one, it's fantastic. However, if you do, how do you get out of Key West?

PremEx Sep 17, 1999 2:24 pm

Sounds dangerous. Count me in!

Rudi Sep 17, 1999 3:05 pm

as a masochist (Premex may confirm this) - these arguments just convinced me to do the utmost possible to assist too (preferably before sep-15 - please (I really should attend then, sep-15-2000, after the next US Tennis Open, the shareholders meeting of Martel Ltd. ... sorry).

And what I learned from the recent storm, to maximise my masochistic experiences a combination of New York and Kew West may be the ultimate experience at that time of the year ...

Hurricanes seem to steer clear of me, so count us in!

Cheers,

After a wonderful weekend in south FL, I must say that I can't possibly pass this opportunity up...

Any weekend in September EXCEPT LABOR DAY WEEKEND> I have to work the holidays so I can go on holiday.

May I suggest that we pick a particular weekend and see what the gang likes? That would make it easier for me to book (and have something to look forward too!)

Key West? Hemmingway? Cats? Fish? Cigars? Copious quantities of adult beverages? Wouldn't DARE miss it now, would we?

Hurricanes enter at your own risk...

Key West is fantastic, but how about March 2000, instead of September? You avoid the hurricanes (and New Yawk's - Noo Joisie's unpredictable spring weather). Spring 2000 in KW is wonderful. Fall can be deadly, even if there isn't a hurricane. I already have a meeting booked and can easily add rooms at a pretty good rate.
I'm arguing here for a time when I can be there, OK? I want to be there!
Premex: The West Coast has never seen a hurricane. I just now lived through one.
Rudi: Do you really care when, except for your scheduling conflicts? A hurricane to the Keys is like an avalanche to Wengen (bad comparison, because Wengen doesn't get in the way of avalanches, but you get the idea. Key West does get in the way of Hurricanes).
Hammertoad: You should know better, but, then, your inland, so you probably don't see the really strong effects. Try getting out of Key West in a hurry.
Jet: In Buffalo, you've never even experienced the fringes of a hurricane. The highest point on Key West is something like 17 feet above sea level. A good hurricane can produce storm surges (high tides) ten or twelve feet above normal. That submerges the island (and that's happened in the past).
I attended a meeting in Key West in September a couple of years ago. No hurricane, but we waded through knee-high water through all of downtown for three days.
I'd just hate to see this Web site die because a bunch of people were on Key West when a killer hurricane hit. That's especially true because there are a lot better times to visit the Keys.

I'm with you philforest, about that time of year I need a little sunbreak. I'll come in March anytime.

September in Seattle is too wonderful to leave. http://talk.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif (Pray that the weather next weekend doesn't make a liar out of me.) http://talk.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif

Punki:
Thanks for the support!
September in Seattle. Isn' that the only month when it rains only 28 of 30 days?
Actually, I love Seattle.

Tolarian Wind Sep 20, 1999 11:42 am

Here's the deal.

It's not what you know but who you know. I got the 99 rate for that reason. It is good only for the month of Sept. If another month is desired, I can assure you it will be twice the 99 rate, if not more.

OK Phil, what kind of rate can you get for March?

Beckles Sep 20, 1999 12:59 pm

Ummm, March is not such a good idea ... two words: SPRING BREAK. Wait until after Easter to avoid the college crowds (Easter is April 23 next year).

As noted somewhere in FT before, if we are going to consider Key West '00 to be one of the mini-FT get togethers, we should just set it up as usual, whoever has the time should go. If we are going to designate it as "PiP2" then we might want to reconsider. Philforest's and Punki's concerns are valid. On the flip side, doing it in March might be too soon after "PiP-HNL." Decisions, decisions.
