After meandering around Europe during the last day and a half Iíve at last started travelling in the right direction!

Not quite. Tap to pay allows transfers from bus or rail for 90 minutes. So you are not paying point to point fares, it is cumulative and the final charge will be calculated at the end of your trip as one fare. It will not, however, max out at a day pass rate.

With a single fare, you can transfer as many times as you need for up to 90 minutes.

There are three ways to purchase single fares:

Tap to Pay

You can tap a contactless Visa or Mastercard credit card or mobile wallet on card readers to pay an adult, cash fare. You don’t need to purchase additional fare when transferring from bus to rail.
Visit the Tap to Pay page for details.

Tap your contactless Visa or Mastercard credit card or mobile device (linked to a Visa or Mastercard credit card) on a card reader to start your journey. Tap your credit card or mobile device when transferring or exiting, with the exception of buses, which are tap in only.

Please note that only one card can be used per person and customers must carry their proof of payment (credit card) with them during their journey.

Paying with a credit card or mobile device allows you to transfer seamlessly across the system. You'll have 90 minutes to make your final transfer on bus, SkyTrain, and SeaBus, and 180 minutes on West Coast Express.

Final Charges
After you've completed your journey, the exact fare will be sent to your credit card company. If paying with a mobile device, you may see various notifications and pre-authorizations in your mobile app after each tap. These notifications are not your charges. To see your final charges, please refer to your credit card statement..

If it's implemented anything like (or hopefully better than) Chicago's Ventra system, phone NFC (i.e. Apple Pay, etc.) should work, too. That'd be good, since I think the only tappable credit cards I have with me charge forex...

Your Costco Visa should work ^

anyone have a recommendation for a prepaid data sim for the weekend? don't need voice, just data.

pudgym29 Sep 11, 18 3:15 pm

Tempted and resisting.

{edit} The walking tours will be between $15-25 each depending on how many people sign up. I will post firm numbers at the end of the registration period, so around Sept 11th or 12th. They will payable in cash (I will be collecting as I see people).

The resistance is to not reply in a snarky remark to angra's retort. I'll bite my lip and restrain myself to a quote {from me}, "If you ever attend a Japan Do, you will have to have some cash". I have pasted above what may require real, physical cash, and perhaps Canadian cash at that. The current US-CDN exchange rate is $1 = 1.306333 CAD. If anybody 'offers' to convert US to Canadian 1-for-1, that is a genuine gouge.
If Vancouver's beerworthy venues actually run out of beer (or ale), I can e-mail some Canadian homebrewers who will have something available.

P.S.A. for those with AT&T:
You may qualify for free calls/texts and 1 GB of data with AT&T's Canada Roaming Bonus:

I'd call 611 and ask for Retention. I did this afternoon thanks to @jackal's prompting, and its now on my plan ^

Bohemian1 Sep 11, 18 10:36 pm

Anything deal you can get from your US mobile provider will likely be way better than anything you could get from a Canadian provider using a local SIM. We have the privilege of paying some of the most ridiculously high rates in the world.

Why? Because we're so polite of course!

If only there was a way to dynamically change plans or providers on demand without the need to swap SIM cards ...

I was actually very close to YVR yesterday afternoon but decided to fly on to SFO for a couple of days. ;)

f0zzyNUE Sep 12, 18 8:58 am

f0zzyNUE I am terribly sorry, but I don't believe the weather gods are on speaking terms with me at the moment. This is not what I ordered.

Indoor things to do: Art Gallery, Museum of Anthropology (although getting there might get a bit wet, not on a direct bus route), FlyOver Canada IMAX, Vancouver Police Museum (this is one I'd really like to do - never been, many Vancouverites don't even know about it), the majority of Granville Island is covered (food and craft markets), Museum of Vancouver.

I am thinking a bike ride is not in the cards.

nomadic.relief Sep 12, 18 10:47 am

For the walking tours, they have been locked in now and are payable in cash. I accept the following currencies:

$33 CAD for both tours, $16.50 for one (gratuity incl)
$25/$12.50 US
Ä21.50/Ä10.75

There is still room for extra participants on these.

Zorak Sep 12, 18 11:02 am

My apologies but something sudden has come up and I going to have to cancel my YVR plans for this weekend :( hope to see you all some other time...

There's always the Aquarium as well.

Most of it is indoors and, if it's nice at the time, you can get a bit of Stanley Park stroll in too. Serviced by both bus and taxis.

Finkface Sep 12, 18 11:59 am

I am now officially in! Many thanks to nomadic.relief for all the hard work. I have updated the wiki (after a few attempts where I screwed it up) and I’m looking forward to meeting you all.

nomadic.relief Sep 12, 18 12:03 pm

:( Sorry to hear that! Next time. PM'd to sort out flight refund.

So I wasn't sure I'd be able to make it to this but I have changed my plans to fly out of TYS rather than RDU so I am a definite. However, I cannot sign up for any of the events. Is it still possible I can attend the flight seeing and official DO dinner? It seems impossible to do so on EventBright.

I believe the dinner was sold out awhile back. IIRC there was discussion upthread about how the restaurant limits group sizes. But perhaps you could organize a (separate) small table with the people who want to eat but couldnít get in the group reservation? I know a few others (like @monitor and @beckoa) would probably join.

That is one 'Do' that is on my sooner-than-bucket list. Anything with beef and EZE can't be all bad.

But first, the soon to be awesome YVR Do!

f0zzyNUE Sep 12, 18 10:36 pm

Unfortunately I can't make it to YVR this weekend due to a work related issue that needs my commitment on Friday and maybe also during the weekend. :(
So my seat for both dinners is available.

I'm sad and sorry - especially as I was talking @nomadic.relief into organizing this DO on a regular base for quite some time ...

nomadic.relief Sep 12, 18 11:38 pm

:(:(:(
I will not be the only to be sad to miss out on seeing you.

And sadly I need to cancel as well. Very disappointed, but life and all that. I'll second a motion for making this an annual event!

Oh no! So bummed we will not get to see you, and sorry that you have to work instead of playing in Vancouver.

I assume when we see you will be fine. I can also send money via Interac transfer if preferable.

I am very much a "go with the flow" traveler, and my main priority is to visit with new and old friends, but for the sake of spurring conversation, I am interested in any of those, in roughly this descending order of intensity

* Police Museum (enthusiasm is infectious)
* Anthropology Museum
* Tie: Art Gallery / Museum of V / Granville Island
* Imax

LOL well if I do this again, I may just have to post discounts for those who actually came! :p

Sorry you can't make it though. See you in a couple weeks!

pudgym29 Sep 13, 18 11:02 am

Base camp

I am in downtown Vancouver. :) Despite a warning, the HI Downtown hostel {v. the other one} is on an avenue that is really quiet. I arrived here @ 23:42 yesterday night.
UA 563 was overbooked by one seat! The announcement was made for somebody to yield their seat. UA could not get you to Vancouver that night if you accepted. So it offered one night's accomodation, a meal; it would put you on an Air Canada flight Thursday morning; and would give you $700 of UA script.
I considered taking this. But, then I would be somewhat restricted to flying on UA for the next year; it would not be enough (probably) to get me to Japan for Hokkai-Do #7; and I might lose all the nights on my hostel reservation if I did not appear there. [I would have contacted it to tell it I would not be there that night. I would be charged for that night.] There was also consideration of the weather. If YVR got socked by rain Thursday, it might have messed me up even further.
There is somebody here who I have known only from the World-Wide Web for probably fifteen years. I strive to meet him today. E-Mails, USPS letters, private messages left on fora where we both are registered have gone unanswered. The contemplation may involve ringing the doorbell at an address. :o
From here, I am heading for CAA on Davie St. for a paper map of Vancouver, and then the currency exchange on W. Pender St.
I hope I can connect to wi-fi somewhere during the afternoon to check on any responses from that person. Lunch will likely be ramen.
Wish me success. :)

NewbieRunner Sep 13, 18 11:28 am

Just boarded UA685 at SFO. Next stop YVR! See you all soon.

P.S. We are back at the gate to pick up a flight attendant to replace one who is sick in YVR for the return flight. Leaving the gate again 70 mins late.

P.P.S. How is weather in YVR? Almost 2 hours after the scheduled departure time we are back at the gate again. Due to weather conditions in YVR the flight might be cancelled! It was going to be a flight under 2 hours and I haven’t packed anything to keep me going and remember this is an Economy flight on United. :( At least the crew are very apologetic and they’ve distributed glasses of water. Let’s see how it goes.

The weather ain't that bad. Currently 14, mostly cloudy but with no rain for next couple of hours. Happy landings!

Yikes. YVR will be 14-16C and rainy on the weekend. YYZ will be 26C and sunny. Well that is rather unfortunate! Leaving the shorts at home, packing a raincoat and umbrella!

Adverse weather was probably misinformation. Cockpit crew was going to time out so they are waiting for a replacement captain and FO. Estimated departure in 20 mins. Keeping my fingers crossed.

boxo Sep 13, 18 3:12 pm

Oh no, the weather forecast has changed since I last checked. Cooler and wetter than expected. :https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/members/nomadic-relief.html" target="_blank">nomadic.relief, will we need cash for walking tour payments?

That would certainly be the preferred option (in any one of the 3 currencies mentioned). Didn't want people paying more EventBrite fees!

I suppose if someone REALLY didn't want to have cash, a preloaded Visa/MC would also be okay.

nomadic.relief Sep 13, 18 8:04 pm

**NOTE: Sorry folks, I had the time wrong on the EventBrite for Friday - it is at 6pm, not 7pm. I have sent everyone who signed up an email. Just posting here to cover bases.

jrl767 Sep 13, 18 8:34 pm

I suspect all that may mean for some is the impetus to get an earlier start on happy hour ;)
