Defintely interested if I am in town. Looking forward to putting faces to handles (I’m talking to you, Beckoa as I have yet to make it to an Alaska do :D). Will confirm 100% as it gets closer and I know where I’ll be.

Crap, I'm out. :(

Return trip also booked from LAX on Saturday Sep 22. So some post-DO activities need to be organized on the way to LAX.

Missed this due to a fixation on the AC FT forum. Thanks @TCook52 for cross-posting this.

Given that...

a) I live about 5 minutes away from the OP
b) I missed the YYJ Do 'cause of a work commitment
c) I've enjoyed the two mini-Dos I've been to

... so I'm in.

My arms were twisted by the usual suspects last weekend and I will be there.

Did it take a whole lot of twisting?

Two more of those usual suspects have air to BC. Time to see what WestJet has to offer. Request that nomadic.relief mark us down as definite.

Excited by Chinatown ^

If Beckoa is coming someone needs to advise Chinatown to order in a few extra semi-trailer loads for him to haul home;)

I am much more concerned about the downtown/underground Costco getting cleaned out. :p

Wiki should be up by the weekend, with an Eventbrite signup likely in July.

canadiancow Jun 13, 18 10:21 pm

I'm tempted. How much notice do you need? I tend not to book my YVR flights until check-in is open. Or in that one case, after check-in had closed already.

LOL yes, I know there are a few "unreliable sorts" who have expressed interest, but who will be iffy right until the very last second possible!

I will be posting some form of registration around July to get a reasonable idea of number of participants. After that there will likely be a cap placed on some activities due to venue limits or feasibility of excessively large groups. But as with anything like this, presumably there will be last minute drop outs, so the possibility of squeezing one or two extra people in last minute is not unreasonable. ;)

That was a once in your lifetime experience and anyone trying to turn the plane around will be thrown into the propeller of said plane,;)

I think I've booked all my flights to/from the Do. Arriving from SFO on Thursday 13th, staying at the Hampton Inn on points (5 nights for the price of 4) and departing on Tuesday 18th.

angra Jun 17, 18 9:20 am

I have booked flights as well. What part(s) of town should we be hunting for lodging?

keitherson Jun 17, 18 1:22 pm

Count me in! :)

Zorak Jun 19, 18 11:25 pm

My September has cleared up, and it's been too long since I've been to YVR (last visit was the 2011 SCF) so I'm in! Booked 9/13-16, staying at the Westin Grand on Robson.

I created a wiki with attendance based on what I could determine from posts above. Feel free to edit as appropriate!

I should have further news in regard to the float plane tours later this week.

As to the previously asked questions of where to book your hotel, Downtown Vancouver is the most centrally located area, but I realize hotels are stupidly priced that time of year. There are a couple people who have mentioned staying closer to the Broadway SkyTrain Station, which is maybe a 7-10 minute walk and then the same for the ride to downtown. Airbnb might be another solid option, heaven knows there's enough contention about housing going to that sort of "transient" population! If going that route, Gastown, Yaletown, and Coal Harbour are most central, but False Creek is also reasonable for a walker.

Fair warning, busses and SkyTrain are great for getting around the downtown core (Google maps is more than sufficient for coordinating routes, stops, times), but we do NOT have Uber. There seem to be lots of taxis, but as someone who lives in the 'burbs, I do not have a good relationship with them (many a denied ride late at night), short profitable rides should be smoother.

penegal Jun 26, 18 9:33 pm

Interested, and following the thread, although fairly tentative at this stage.

nomadic.relief Jul 1, 18 2:07 pm

So I have sourced out the flights, but there are two options for Saturday Sept 16th: $114 (so ~$87US) for 30 min flight (20min in air) or @175 (so ~$133US) for 45min flight (35 min in air). I might be able to get two separate flights, a short and a long, but the preference is for both to be the same. It would be for an Otter, 10 passengers each. Can I please get expressions of interest in the wiki to get an idea of how many would likely partake in this activity? Thx! (At this point just to get a clearer idea of numbers/flight length.)

The land based Otter has been part of my life fore decades. It will be fun to experience a water takeoff.

nomadic.relief Jul 1, 18 11:05 pm

That'd be them! Thanks for the photo reference, I am useless with that stuff!

Agreed, especially if you fly into YWH!

But even just tooling around the greater YVR area, this is a fun way to fly and I encourage all out-of-towners for the Do to give this a go. The views are amazing.

this is about 15 seconds from landing to the south at YWH — yes, the bank angle is about 20 degrees at an altitude of maybe 150 feet

BOB W Jul 3, 18 12:00 am

Looks like a wimpy landing compared to some AK landings I have been on.;)

jackal Jul 7, 18 12:25 am

I'm in!

Will think about float plane stuff later, but put me down for beer and other activities for sure! ^

beckoa Jul 7, 18 12:39 am

What's the inflight service like on the Otter?

Been on a beaver on floats before... not an otter.

That will include the simplest of service. The pilot will turn toward the Pax prior to takeoff and give the pre-departure safety briefing. This will include "Should the plane go silent inflight, that means the engine has failed. This translates to " Bend over and kiss you arse goodbye". ;):D

Bohemian1 Jul 7, 18 11:27 am

While the twin Otter is a great plane, for sightseeing trips I actually prefer the single Otter. For some reason the windows seemed better placed or maybe even larger.

But both are great planes.
