Don't forget to bring special glasses for looking at the sun. We've ordered a couple pair off of Amazon. There are literally hundreds of choices. And the cost is pretty reasonable.

2017 Eclipse viewing on the cheap

As it happens, I need to fly from BWI to CLE on August 21st, and Southwest has an itinerary with a perfectly timed stopover at BNA (Nashville).

I am well aware of the risk of irregular operations, but if all goes well my wife and I will get to view totality somewhere on the airport grounds. It helps that Southwest will check our carry-on bags at no extra cost, and our KTN's will speed our return to the secure zone.

If rains, you won't see anything on the ground. Why don't you try to pick a flight that will fly through it, above the clouds?

the "good luck" required for viewing this from the air is a much longer shot than on the ground. on the ground, the only significant variable is weather. from the air, it's flight route, seat assignment, weather, and probably a host more of variables...not to mention IRROPS.

Seeing lots of references to credit/debit card machines not functioning during the eclipse. Advice is to "have cash on hand". It's in the St. Joe materials listed here and I've seen it elsewhere.

Why do people believe this to be a potential issue?

Probably the aliens who land during total darkness cause this sort of chaos

Credit cards are solar powered and therefore won't work during an eclipse, it's well-known

A lot of businesses (in general, not sure about St. Joe) do have Square readers and the like. If the cell network's congested enough, those could very well not work. That's hardly due to the eclipse though and definitely doesn't affect all businesses.

i'm literally less concerned about this than I was about Y2K...and that's saying something.

I'm booked on a bus from Boulder, CO to somewhere around Douglas, WY. No miles or points involved.

Well, I'm glad I switched over to a hydro-powered card. Looks like I'll be okay.

Here's a weird one. I was reading an article about how the University of Missouri has lost enrollment after the riots there some months ago, and it says the university is right in the eclipse path and is renting dorm rooms for $120:
