LAX Meetup?

I'm surprised I've not seen much activity around LAX area in the way to meetups and such.

Seems like there HAS to be a few people on FT who live around here?

You are correct, there are quite a number of Flyertalkers who live in the greater LA area.

Here are a couple of examples of prior LA area Do's. (Do = meeting of Flyertalkers, whether it be for a meal, drinks, at an airline lounge, etc)

I suggest you start a thread (which you have done) and post an idea to meet for a drink or meal in XXXXX area of LA. My guess is you will get folks that are interested.

Yep-- plenty of us LAX FTers. Would be great to have a LAX Meetup. Count me in if I'm in town.

There are plenty of FTers based in Los Angeles metro in the Where We All Live thread.

I'm in San Diego but I'd come up for a LA meet up.

Maybe someday that I can meet you guys at LAX. If I have enough time. I will let you guys know.

Glad to see some interest!

Of course, I don't think I have the time right now to actually plan something myself, work is crazy busy. I'm also pretty new to this stuff, so I don't know if would be comfortable organizing anything.

I know they did a DO at the restaurant @ LAX before it closed, what are some other common places for that stuff around here?

There have been a # of LA area Dos over the years. Most are just meal-based, but some incorporated more - touring an area or a studio.

Often, but not always, they were held near the LAX area as it's a mid-point (mutually inconvenient to everyone :p) with a variety of freeways nearby, or close for those flying in to LA who want to meet up on a layover.

We had a # of lunch Dos on the weekend a few years back when AA had some mistake fare/promo that everyone hopped on & FTers were constantly flying in/out of LA. That's the other thing to keep in mind. In addition to Dos you might plan, keep an eye in CommunityBuzz where someone posts they'll be in LA on X date & wants to get together for dinner. When I lived in LA I planned some Dos. Now that I live elsewhere I normally post that I'll be in LA on X dates & who wants to meet up; I do the same on long layovers at ORD & meet some of the ORD folk.

LA Do locations have been at a Thai place in Westchester (Siam), In-n-Out Burger next to LAX, Panchos in Manhattan Beach (Mexican), Petros in Manhattan Beach (Greek), Proud Bird near LAX, a place in Long Beach overlooking the boats that has 100 beers on tap (name escapes me; Jailer would know), and when sweetwillie is in town usually somewhere interesting like Chinatown because he's the king of good eats.

Organizing a meal event isn't that difficult. Pick the place, the date & time, find out if they take ressies, keep track of the thread to see who can make it/who's a maybe. Figure out a meeting spot at the location or a way to identify each other. I often made the reservation name "Flyertalk". Remind everyone that not all locations accept multiple credit cards ;), so to bring some cash in case there's a limit on how many cc's they'll take. The best way to sort out the bill is to pass it around & tell everyone to figure out their sub-total for what they ate/drank & add 25% (25% covers tax & tip). That usually prevents shortages.

Have fun!

Cheers.

I am in LA Saturday night Feb 8th and also Friday night Feb 28th and would of course like to meet some more FTers :)

LAtraveler1 Mar 27, 2014 11:01 am

I would also be interested in attending a meetup

I started a separate meet up thread for a targeted date (4/5) due to a long layover, but typically speaking I would come to LAX for a DO, this is especially true if it were scheduled on a Saturday or Sunday at lunch time as I would just fly down and back on the same day...even a quick overnight is no big deal.

Not this Thursday, but next Thursday (the 24th) I'm going to be in LA (right by LAX) for the night. I'm flying out the next morning. Does anyone want to get dinner?
