FlyerTalk Postcard Request For First Grade Class Project

A Delta Air Lines employee who has been helpful to FlyerTalk in the past sent to me an e-mail message that there is a competition at Clemson Elementary School as to which class in the first grade can receive the most postcards from the furthest reaches of our planet, and he is requesting for FlyerTalk members to assist. The postcards should have either the name of the place, a picture of something recognizable, or both; and they should please mention the name Wyatt — one of the students in the class in the first grade which this Delta Air Lines employee knows well — in the postcard.

The postcards should be addressed to:
Address removed upon request as of Monday, March 25, 2013 — please do not send any more postcards. Thank you for your efforts!
I am uncertain at this time as to what is the deadline and what the class with the most international postcards will win, but if you happen to be somewhere outside of the United States, please take a moment to grab a postcard and mail it to the address above.

Thank you in advance.

Can I cheat and send two?

But not sure how it would work if I send a post card from china but with a stamp from another country. ;)

Count me in! I'm headed to Amsterdam next week, so can mail one from there.

I have a postcard from London but as DHalltheway mentions, the postage stamp would be from the U.S. Can you check with your Delta friend on that - ie, does it have to be an int'l stamp too.

On a dif note - does it have to be postcards from the most different int'l places or can it be from the same place? I'm meeting some FTers whilst in AMS & can ask them to mail a postcard as well. Plus you've got Gauchos Do this weekend.

Cheers.

My stamp is also non-US. :D

So I hope it qualifies as being from 2 countries.

Pat89339 Aug 28, 2012 11:11 am

They don't want any domestic? Wouldn't it be cool to get one from all 50 states?

NO! I absolutely refuse to assist you in this!!!

Mainly, because that same DAL employee wrote to me yesterday, and knowing her and how much she has helped many of us, I went out today and bought 4 Israeli postcards to send to the school.

To legalize Canarsie's post, I do want to say that this employee is an FTer herself. (Community Buzz posts are only allowed to be made about FTers. Otherwise they are moved to Omni.)

Well my Amsterdam postcard will be mailed from Amsterdam. But the London postcard will have a US stamp.

Cheers.

Is 4 a lucky number?

Anyways, I have more trips coming up. So I guess we can add a little to the list.

DLroads Aug 29, 2012 8:20 am

I will send one from NY today. I am not sure if domestic ones counts
EDITED: Saw the rules, as far as possible. Well, I will send one for the fun, but I will call my cousins in Melbourne (Down there) and ask them to do something useful

By coincidence, "4" is the exact number of different types of postcards the store had.

Just curious why she couldn't post this request her self ????

This is because she is not the person who placed the request, and she has only posted a couple of times on FlyerTalk.

She may have asked the Dovster on behalf of the Delta Air Lines employee who originally placed the request. To my knowledge, he is not a FlyerTalk member.

While I am awaiting the answers to the other questions posted in this discussion, this request is ongoing for the school year, and bragging rights appears to be the only prize.

Thank you to all who have committed to sending some postcards from international destinations outside of the United States!

chchkiwi Aug 29, 2012 4:44 pm

I will send a card or two from New Zealand today.

Canarsie Aug 29, 2012 5:27 pm

Here is an update with new information:
  • It is fine if the stamps on the postcard are from a different country, but then that postcard does not count as two countries.
  • Each FlyerTalk member may send multiple postcards from different countries.
  • They do want a card from each of all 50 United States, as well as from every county in South Carolina.

I hope this answers all of the questions. Thank you again, everyone!

Pat89339 Aug 29, 2012 6:39 pm

I'll send cards from both Oahu and Kauai. :)

Now I need to send another postcard from home.

Hopefully it counts as the country that's on the postcard & not the stamp.

Cheers.

After informing the employee of Delta Air Lines of the commitments for postcards from Hawaii, New Zealand, Saudi Arabia, England, Australia and the Netherlands, with possible postcards from Argentina, I received an e-mail message from him this morning that he “couldn’t be any happier.”

Thank you, everyone!

Correct — the postcard is what counts, not the stamp...

...although I would not be the least bit surprised if the stamps cause some sort of buzz in the classroom — almost like a side scavenger hunt of curiosity: “Cool postcard! Where is that stamp from?!?”

Throw in China, Singapore, Thailand, and Hong Kong (Technically part of China too I know.) for good measure too.

MDtR-Chicago Aug 30, 2012 9:35 am

I'm surprised no one has put together a scoreboard with a big map. :D

kipper Aug 31, 2012 6:18 am

If they don't have one from PA yet, I'll add one from there towards the states, and possibly MD. I'll also see if Mr. Kipper has any post cards from any of his overseas trips that I can pilfer. :)

For those of us who can easily obtain prints of their travel photos, a 4 x 6-inch color print makes a nice postcard. I send them to my dad all the time with a "wish you were here" message and the location where I took the shot. FTers have pix from everywhere.

SOLTATIO Sep 3, 2012 1:13 am

I will send one from Thailand and one from Vietnam. Until when do we have? Also, there are some great apps which allow you to send postcards made from photos on your phone, so if you were in an exotic location and you took a photo of something on your phone, see if you can download the app and send it straight from there. You pay with your card and they even go to the post office for you... ;)

EDIT: Postcards sent! Hope they get there safely.

andreadbc Sep 3, 2012 6:29 am

I'll be sending one from Madrid!

It would be awesome to know how many postcards in total are received by the class or maybe they could update a map like this one or this one :)

edited to add: sent!

Pat89339 Sep 3, 2012 10:05 am

On the postcards I've sent so far, I'm also including information about the area for Wyatt--why I'm there, what I'm doing, some background information on the place that a grade school student might like to know about. I'm also signing them Pat (FT) in case they are interested in knowing how many came through FT.

I left my postcards blank. I think that anything that I told elementary school students about myself could get me arrested for contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

SkiAdcock Sep 11, 2012 8:04 am

Ok, Amsterdam postcard bought, addressed & some info on the city written. Now to find a stamp. Place selling them only had stamps for Europe, not US.

Cheers.

Any updates on how this project is going? Just curious...:)

I have not heard from my contact at Delta Air Lines.

I will ask...

...and here is the response:

As of 2 weeks ago, Wyatt had way more than anyone else from every corner of the world! Laura saw the map at Open House and she said it was overflowing! She also said the teacher was having trouble keeping up because so many are coming in. The project goes on until the end of the school year so she has plenty of time to sort them out!

Laura also mentioned that some of the postcards have little bits of information on them about the place they are from and Wyatt is loving that!

Thank you for helping with this project!!!
I do not know who is Laura, but this indicates to me that everyone has done a great job so far.

Please keep them coming!

While not an exotic locale, I picked up one from Ephrata Cloister, as I figured it would be an odd, but interesting postcard and history lesson if they were so inclined. :)

I won't be sending any more postcards from Israel, but if you think that Mrs. Turpin would like her first grade class to get some suggestive postcards from Las Vegas, remind me when we meet in NYC in December to send some out.

Thanks for the update and this is great news! Hopefully Wyatt learns lots about this big world and one day opts to travel and see more of it.

Pat89339 Oct 25, 2012 5:10 pm

Oh great! I'll send one from London this week. ^

SanDogEngr Oct 25, 2012 11:20 pm

I'm in Shizuoka, JP for another week and will to send a few from here. Sounds like a very cool class project/contest.

What a great project and how wonderful that we can all help out ^ I will be sure to buy an extra postcard and send it in to Wyatt's class.
