Oh they are newbies. Well and truly. The summers here are just fugly for anyone who does not come from an equatorial country. I love the idea of Fuji, but the other days they will simply spend indoor whining about the heat. Heck, even the locals do that. Spring is soooooo much more pleasant. As is Fall for that matter.

Summers in mainland Japan are no worse than the midwest and southern US. I'd say the only difference is when in the late summer the concrete absorbs all of the heat and it just radiates off of the streets well into the night, but it's similar in any large city. Now southern Japan, Okinawa to be exact is as humid as a mother.
With respect to Tokyo specifically, there is no comparable city in the US in terms of size or density and the suits and crowded commutes make for some nasty hot times. Air-conditioned cars to go everywhere are not the norm here so it is an all day experience unlike the into out of car stuff in the States.
I think that without a doubt Tokyo in July or August would knock the socks off anyone not used to it day in and day out in a major urban center of this magnitude.
If I were doing the inviting I would invite in Spring or Fall only.

Like New Covent Garden Market which is no longer in Covent Garden? In Japanese the new market is referred to as "Toyosu shin-shijo" or "Toyosu new market" for now.

True those are some ugly summers too. The midwest I always found drier though, maybe me The south except for Texas is wetter for sure. Texas tends to much drier at least up by Dallas, not sure about Houston area where I suspect it gets fairly muggy indeed.

Sometimes it's nice to have 4 seasons once in a while. We only get 1 season in LA
