TV just reported a plane crashed into the stands about 1/2 hour ago. Had no further information, beyond hospitals are alerted.

Not the one with the FT logo!

KOLO-TV reported that the plane was named Galloping Ghost and was piloted by Jimmy Leeward. The plane went down soon after take-off during the beginning of the Unlimited race, the station said.

a P51 mustang crashed at the flying legands airshow in Duxford this past july

btw whats the point of an Air race unless one plane is shooting at another ??

Just saw the clip on MSNBC and CNN. It looks like the plane just went straight down. The report also said that the plane is a P51 Mustang, the pilot's name is Jimmy Leeward and he is 80 years old.

My thoughts and prayers go out to all affected by this tragedy :(

Yes, it is looking like many were affected. Very unfortunate.

how sad

When the newsflash hit, one of my first thoughts were on this thread.

Here's a picture from last year's Reno races of the plane that crashed:

I've attended these races in the past and my heart goes out to all those affected by this sad event.

pshuang just called. He knew we would be concerned. He asked me to post that he was with the Radial Velocity team when the crash occurred. He and every member of the team are fine.

I've just seen on the news that the rest of the race has been canceled.

I'm glad to hear that our crew is safe ^ But I feel so bad for the people who lost loved ones today. CNN has a video showing the plane in a dive, and you can see when it hits the ground :(

Terrible news. I saw it as the lead headline in our paper here and as soon as I saw where it was my heart sank even further. Glad the Radial Velocity team are okay but, like others, my heart goes out to all those affected by this tragic accident. :(
