I think SkiAdcocks comments should be taken with a dose of humor- as I'm sure it was intended. And I am looking forward to both attending the event and supporting the charities. Sounds like there will be some great prizes. ^

As someone who does a ton of charity work, I can appreciate the enthusiasm of the host or hostess of the fundraiser. Its not easy doing fundraising in hard economic times, but without charity many of the organizations that do a tremendous job in making lives better for people (and animals...;)) would cease to exist. If you don't want to participate, don't - but cut the folks who want to make the event a success some slack, even if you don't think its the proper venue. They are doing it for a good cause, and if you don't choose to support them finacially thats fine, but the least you can do is support their effort.

I am a great admirer of SkiAdcock - if anyone is going to interrupt my conversations, please let it be her! :)

My comments are meant to discuss the general phenomenon. That you and I might appreciate such causes and workers, and what we might do with our own time and resources, are not the issue. Autism, hunger, battered wives, earthquake and tsunami relief in Japan, there is no end to genuinely good causes, each deserving of all the "slack" we can cut. Question is, which venue and which approach would be appropriate?

This is a short event and as it is, people would be struggling to find a few minutes to locate someone, catch up, ask a question, etc. My suggestion and preference is to be visible (set up a table, or even walk around with a sign), but refrain from active solicitation, which tends to and has interrupted conversations. I am afraid however that "refraining from active solicitation" is not suited to SkiAdcock's personality, and we just might have to gag and display her at a table with a collection box. :)

On a related note, I am also happy to invite hundreds of good charities and their extremely dedicated workers to come and mingle with us during the talks. In fact, if you tell me your work address and meeting schedule, I can send them to your business meetings as well. I can guarantee that every story will bring tears to the eyes of all meeting participants. Want to take me up on that? :)

What redreeper said on both parts. :) It's all in good fun & for a good cause. If folk want to purchase raffle tickets in hopes of winning the ipad or other prizes, great. If not, no worries. The part about taking away your upgrades was a joke :D

I'm frantically trying to find my notes from both SMD2 & Chicago Sem 1 to remember what we had for the exchange rates. I'm thinking the envelopes we wrote the info on were turned in to the organizers w/ the various currencies inside. Was going to send an email to folk who helped w/ both to see if they remember. I do know that the GBP/Euro folk get more tickets due to their curriences kicking the US$$ arse. But no worries - I'll have it sorted by the time I start collecting. :)

Re: Sat evening. I'll be at the event all day, but am actually staying at the LGA Marriott Fri & Sat night. I'm probably not going to go into the city due to a 6am return flight Sun, although I might if it was early enough. I'm around to meet up for dinner near LGA Sheraton. Supposedly there are some restaurants nearby. I'll catch a shuttle or cab back to Marriott after that if people want to meet up.

Cheers.

:D :D

BTW - I'll be starting on Friday night during cocktail hour for 3 reasons: 1) tommy told me to! 2) folk who are drinking donate more ;); 3) if I can get most of it out of the way then, then I might be able to relax/attend the sessions. :)

Of course I don't know how many are attending Fri night cocktail hour, so some 'get your tickets, get your tickets here' will indeed be going on on Sat. It would help if people would just hold out the $$ while they are deep in their conversations. I have total faith that FTers can multi-task. :D

Cheers.

Does anyone need a room at LGA Sheraton for Sat night?

Since I'm going to be at the LGA Marriott on Fri & Sat eves, I've got one at the LGA Sheraton at the conf rate of $139 if someone wants it. Please let me know via PM if you do. I'll cancel the room Thursday a.m. before I leave for the FT Awards if I don't hear from anyone.

Cheers.

Why else do you think I feel the need to attend the seminar - to learn how to buy raffle tickets? :D However, my LGA stop is part of a longer trip: ORD-NYC-NRT-BKK-NRT-ORD.

Winner of the ipad at SMD2's charity auction on board the charter flight, at Boeing's Payne Field.

Randy bought tickets for everybody on board, including the crew.

Bring it on Sharon. No CO blankets this time, please. :D

Lost my tickets in computer snafu

Signed up for Bacc and Bacc35 and didn't print the tickets. Computer snafu has made the email inaccessible (my snafu really--I was deleting what I thought were unnecessary files). Do we need the physical tickets or is there some other way of access to the events--cocktail party & seminars?

BTW there's a great rate at the new Sheraton LIC, just opening tomorrow. $149 AI or 2800 starpoints + $45. Easy subway ride 20 min & closer to Manhattan

GrizShel Apr 27, 11 12:29 pm

What's the best way to get to Newark airport for a Sunday afternoon flight?

It seems the purple subway line 7 is a straight shot to Grand Central Station, correct?
And from there what are the best options?
NJ Transit train?
Amtrak?
Shuttle services?
(I'm assuming a taxi costs significantly more for 1 person).

(I was previously thinking of taking a van from LGA, but it seems like this might cost more and take longer). It's pretty hard to find services, SuperShuttle wanted $90 (ouch!).

GoingAway Apr 27, 11 12:34 pm

Check the NY forum, they have prices, etc but the bus from GrandCentral (also stops at Bryant Park and Port Authority) is the best bet imo to get to EWR

I don't plan on printing anything to take with me and would deal with it upon arrival if thats an issue, don't sweat it IMO

You're probably right but its moot now. The ticket processing outfit emailed me new tickets & I've gotten the printed ones in my wallet.

Kudos to all.

IMO, the easiest connection from the #7 to the Olympia bus is at Bryant Park (5th Ave & 42nd st). Just exit the subway, and cross 42nd st.

You buy your ticket(cc option available) on board the bus when it stops at Port Authority. R/T option saves you a couple of dollars, provided you can use both tickets.
Sunday city traffic should be ok. If it were rush hour, the train out of Penn Stn would be a better option.

aktchi Apr 27, 11 1:41 pm

I have a much simpler problem: How to get to the seminar Sheraton from LGA? Does Sheraton run a shuttle? Do I just have to cab it?

A slightly different NYC commute problem on Monday: How to get from Upper East Side to JFK (AA terminal)?

As you can tell, I am not exactly an expert on the area. :)

SkiAdcock Apr 27, 11 1:48 pm

When I checked LGA Sheraton website, it says it runs a shuttle from LGA to the hotel.

Can't help you on JFK question - as GoingAway suggests, you might want to check the NYC forum.

Cheers.

UES to JFK

http://mta.info/nyct/maps/submap.htm

simplest option via train:
- #6 (downtown) to 51st/Lex, then switch to
- E train (Queensbound) to Sutphin Boulevard/ Archer Avenue
- exit subway, take elevator to top floor, and cross the LIRR platform to take
- AirTrain to Terminal 8 (AA)

Or, depending on where you are in the UES, use hopstop.com to give you better bus to subway info.

Aktchi,
I have used NY Airport Services many times. It runs from Grand Central Station, Port Authority Bus Terminal, Penn Station, Bryant Park. You can get the schedule here:
http://www.nyairportservice.com/
You can take the 4,5 or 6 train to Grand Central from UES or a cab. The express bus costs $15 to JFK and $12 to LGA, less for a roundtrip (and does not need to be the same airports).

GrizShel:
I was considering this airport shuttle option, LGA-EWR is $32. I also have a 7:15PM flight out of EWR on Sunday. I am not familiar with them though and still need to confirm their schedule, which seems to be hourly only.

I have a room at the Sheraton I'm willing to give up if someone needs it. Friday night only. $139 group rate.

PM me if you want it, otherwise I'll cancel it Friday.

I'll also be staying at the LGA Marriott - and thanks to Sharon's post for reminding me to post this....

FT Awards, Randy Summit, FTU tickets available

Didn't make it out of Australia this morning, so have tickets available for all 3 main events : Frequent Traveler Awards; Randy Petersen Exec Summit; & Frequent Traveler University to transfer to someone else or a few people.

Also have 2 reservations at the group rate: IN 28th OUT 29th, and IN 29th April OUT 1st May, both 2 double beds. Not sure what the transfer process is for the accommodations. If I don't hear anything about the rooms I'll cancel direct before penalty time.

Please PM me.

Storyteller

SkiAdcock Apr 28, 11 6:24 am

Storyteller, I know someone who could probably use those rooms. I'll PM him to PM you.

Cheers.

dohvegas Apr 28, 11 11:09 am

Has anyone taken the ETS shuttle from LGA-JFK? It appears no reservation is necessary and it is only $10. I am thinking about taking the Sheraton shuttle to LGA then the ETS to JFK instead of cabbing it. I have a 9pm flight Saturday.

I have a bed available in a double room at the Sheraton for Friday night. PM if interested. If you have a car, maybe we can make a ride/hotel deal.

Also, do you think that an April 30-May 1 stay will qualify for the "Starwood Stay 3, Get Away Free Night" promo that begins May 1? :D

aktchi Apr 28, 11 11:21 am

Looks like I may also have an extra bed available, so a room-mate would be welcome. Friday night only.

Contact me, or just find me.

In fact, feel especially free to cut in if you see any raffle-ticket seller walking in my direction! :D

You can run but you can't hide :p :D

And after toting one of the raffle auction items through TSA, and having TSA, FAs & RCC agents comment on it, people better buy some tickets!

Trying to get to FT Awards tonight & LGA is a mess, with flights being severely delayed and/or cancelled. We won't even have an update for another hour if we'll be a go or just flatout cancelled on my flight.

Cheers.

Why do I suspect you are somehow behind the reason for these delays? :D

....and (very) unfortunately I've just been called out with the pups for an mh/disaster response so I will not be attending. Would anyone like my ticket? I'm don't want any compensation, but would appreciate the taker buying raffle tix in the amount of the ticket price instead.

PM me if you want it.

You can take the 7 train to the N/Q train at Queensborough Plaza. The N/Q train will take you to 34th Street which will link you to the PATH train. You can take the PATH train to Newark.

This is the cheapest option. $2.25 subway ride plus $1.75 PATH train ticket. But it will take considerable time. I would guess about 2 or 2.5 hours.

The other options, which would be faster (but more expensive), would be:

(1) Take the 7 to Grand Central and then the EWR Coach USA Bus from Grand Central/Port Authority to EWR:

I think it's $15 one-way, take a look at the website for the exact pickup location. You can take the 7 train to Grand Central and then exit Grand Central to the bus stop. I believe the stop is on 41st Street between Lex and Park, but please confirm with the site below:

http://www.coachusa.com/olympia/ss.newarkairport.asp

(2) Take the 7 to Queensborough Plaza, transfer to the N/Q train to 34th Street, walk a block to Penn Station and take the NJ Transit to EWR.

The NJ Transit is much faster than the PATH. Check the schedule below for times, as they do run every 20 minutes or so on the weekend. I think it's $6 or so.

This might have been the best option since the subway - NJT transit combo took me 2 full hours (track delay on line 7) and cost me $16.75 to get to EWR (no time to buy ticket before boarding). Thanks every one for the suggestions.

Thanks to Tommy and the other organizers, speakers, etc. - great job!
