Get Well Soon!

This thread is for FlyerTalk members who are currently ailing.

The first FlyerTalk member in this thread that could use our best wishes in recovering back to complete health is MikeMpls, as this is what he posted in The Delta Forum Lounge Thread — Everybody is Welcome!:

Originally Posted by MikeMpls (Post 13171613)
As a very small number of you already know (and the rest are now finding out) I was hospitalized with a heart attack just before Christmas. Revived 3 times by electro-shock and sedated for 10+ days, I eventually emerged from the sedation 100% disabled around Jan. 3.

As part of this experience, I believe I have come to a full realization of the meaning of "primarily there for your safety" (PTFYS). These are the people who've spent the last 3 weeks keeping me fed, drugged and bathed and even wiping my butt for me when I had neither the strength nor balance to stand on my own. These people are not flight attendants.

We should demand a proper level of service every time we hear that "primarily there for your safety". At one point one of my RNs counted 23 tubes coming out of my body. They added a couple more they finally started reducing the count. Delta could make a lot of money installing tubes for food & drink & even extra oxygen, e.g. $25 first tube, $35 2nd tube, with surcharges for special lines for high-quality alcohol, etc. They also need to add talcum powder to the carts (use your own imagination :D).

I was largely unaware of what was happening, but in my mind & in the best traditions of FT, I did take one final road trip, flying to Juarez, renting a car & driving to San Diego, where I believed I had the heart attack. (Actually it happened in a Minneapolis hospital where I had checked in for observation on Dec. 21 & never checked out).

One crucial point (esp. for high-mileage road warriors): One of my earliest clues that something was amiss was a dream 4 years ago during a red-eye back from SFO that I couldn't breath. It recurred perhaps 2-3 times in over the years. It wasn't a dream. Eventually I couldn't breath at night at sea level. There were other subtle clues not travel related, but in todays HMO environment of case management by pharmaceutical prescriptions, none were truly addressed. The morale of the story here is to pay attention to what might be happening in the 8,000 atmosphere of a plane. It could be real.

And a question: Does anyone know where I can find a local supply of the canned pink grapefruit juice Delta sometimes sells in the lounges? The canned OJ is distributed in-flight, and in the past I've been unable to find a local supply of the canned OJ, not even at high-end stores such as Byerly's. The cans of pink grapefruit juice are sold ("contribution requested") in the lounges are part of their breast cancer fund-raising. Right now I'm barred from consuming oranges & OJ, but a week staring at a stylized-photo of a bottle of grapefruit juice across from my bed in the ICU has left me with quite a craving.

Please join me in wishing MikeMpls a speedy recovery.

Mike, I hope every day that passes brings you some improvement!

SS255 Jan 13, 2010 6:11 pm

Great idea for a thread, but hopefully there will be no cause to ever bump this thread up once Mike is "up in the air" again.

Wishing you a speedy recovery, Mike!

Best wishes Mike. You are a trooper and a great FlyerTalker.

As I battle my own health issues with back surgery next week, its heartwarming to see FTers wishing one another well.

Jaimito Cartero Jan 14, 2010 2:51 am

Keep up your recovery, Mike!

Best wishes for your recovery. Having suffered a heart attack 3 years ago I know how terrifying it all is but you can get back to normal....it will be a different type of normal though.

I agree with you about what all that flying can do to the body. I cut way back on air travel after late 2006 for just that reason (and recommendation of doctors). Mike, neither of us are going to Cuzco in this lifetime!

Get well, love to you and Kathy.

I am sorry to hear about that, Mrp Alert.

I hope that your back surgery is as painless and flawless as possible, and that you recover back to complete health as quickly as possible.

I remember when that happened.

How are you feeling today, dedehans?

While never having met Mrp Alert or MikeMpls here's hoping I can at a future FT Do and we're all in good health. Best recovery wishes. :)

squeakr Jan 14, 2010 12:27 pm

best wishes for an ongoing recovery to Mike and MRP

Mike - So glad you had great care and are surviving your ordeal.

MRPalert - best wishes for a speedy recovery from surgery.

Canarsie - thanks for starting this thread.

TrojanHorse Jan 14, 2010 1:31 pm

mike.. get well soon.. hoping for a full recovery for you

to Carnesie.. i disagree that we have one thread for get well wishes.. there are not enough of these posted where we need a master thread.. it seems to diminish the get well wishes..

I want to see the Get well name (FT Name I mean) in the thread title.. you never know when it might be someone in the FT community a little closer to you than others and you may not know.. this thread I may not open till I have a little more free time.. personally I will start a new thread if I (knock on wood that I don't) ever have to start one of these threads..

chanp Jan 14, 2010 2:28 pm

Get well soon.

N830MH Jan 14, 2010 9:31 pm

Yeah, me too. Get well soon and you will get fully recoverable anytime soon. I am so worried about him and he should have to stay at home for awhile. He need to get on his own exercise at home. Do yourself to take a walk around the neighborhood. He need to get feeling better. It should try to get stronger recovery after suffered his heart attacks. I don't believe it what is specific time for him.

Mrp Alert Jan 21, 2010 3:35 am

I go under the knife today around noon. Will post an update in 2-3 days once they let me out of the hospital. I will try to steal a nurse's cell phone to logon sooner than that.

Marty: Here's hoping you can log on sooner than later as no doubt you'll find the FT cold turkey more painful than the knife. ;)

Wishing you, MikeMpls & violist very speedy recoveries!

I plan to call Mrp Alerts father tonite to see how he is doing and I will see him on Saturday (assuming he can have guests)... I will update the thread with his status...

Mike and Marty, I hope we all meet again, back at 100%, at Star MegaDo 2!

GoingAway Jan 21, 2010 5:46 pm

I strongly second TrojanHorse's thoughts below. Same as TH, I would want something obvious so I'd know if someone I cared about/knew was hurt. Buried in the thread as it could be, you could totally miss who was sick. This is not I cut my finger stuff, but larger "get wells" going out. More importantly, people aren't going to keep opening this thread up when someone posts to it, as they will assume it's the same person receiving wishes, and quickly get tired of seeing get well wishes (or assume those are get well wishes) and thereby miss that someone they cared about was ill. I would guess that SS255 whose post I also included below wouldn't even think that more than 1 FT'er is included in this speedy recovery thread and therefore is likely unaware that there is more than 1 FT'er in the hospital, ill, undergoing surgery, etc at this time.

Spoke to Mrp Alerts dad earlier today and all went well. He will be in the hospital for 3 days and then will get to go home (assuming no complications from this point forward). A few minutes ago, my cell rang, and it was Mrp Alert! So, I guess he is doing fine!!! Sounded a bit groggy, and said the pain is definately there, but overall doing great!

I will keep everyone posted!

AKLDUBFlyer Jan 22, 2010 1:24 am

I hope that you all get back up to flying form soon. Prayers coming from down under....

totti Jan 22, 2010 5:55 am

I just learned about this incident today. Get well soon MikeMpls.

BiziBB Jan 22, 2010 6:04 am

I've had a very busy week and missed a fair bit of 'check in' time to see the latest on FT, so my thoughts and prayers are with Mike, a very interesting dinner companion, and Marty, a fun guy to chew the fat with, over a beer, are feeling 100%, asap.

Thanks for the heartfelt and wise notes about your experiences, Mike.
Especially for FT's hardworking road warriors who might be in high pressure situations.

Cheers,
Ben

dedehans Jan 23, 2010 6:35 am

I haven't been keeping up with FT lately so thanks for your question, Canarsie, even if answer is late.

I am in good health but small damage to heart has kept me from high altitudes (hence, Cuzsco and Nepal not DO destinations in either Mike's or my lifetime), makes afternoon naps a must and slowed me down on the long distance flights.......:(

Miss not seeing you for so many moons!

Hi everybody. I am still in the hospital even though I was supposed to be released yesterday. The surgery appears to have been a huge sucess untangling all my nerves and fusing the vertebrae. Unfortunately, my body has taken an extra couple days to heal as compared with the average patient. I was able to get out of bed and do a few laps around the floor tonight which was a healthy sign. Hopefully I will be released tomorrow or sent to physical rehab.

Thanks again to all of you for your support. It has meant a lot to me and the other FTers who fallen ill.

Best wishes from my heart to my fellow sick members.

Jaimito Cartero Jan 24, 2010 2:00 am

Always going for the tight connection so you can get routed through Barcelona, eh? I had to read your last line about "sick members" to get the real meaning. Get well Martyballs!

Jaimito is correct that the quickes way home from Central America is via BCN.

I am glad to report that I will be released from the hospital in 30 minutes. 6-8 weeks with a back brace and I should be back to car renting and globe trotting. Yay!!!
