How to start a small gathering?

Hi there, newbie to CommunityBuzz! here...

If I wanted to try to get a small gathering (for beers) started here for some FT folks here in Charlotte (such as, arbitrarily, US Airways Club folks living here in town), would I just open a thread on here? Would appreciate any suggestions...

SkiAdcock Nov 25, 2009 3:42 pm

Yup, that's about it. Pretty easy - not all Dos are big ones. A simple Charlotte folk want to get together? thread title would work - then toss out some dates in the thread. If you peruse the forum, you'll find some areas do it on a regular basis - the DC thread is an example.

Cheers.

If you've spotted a couple people who show Charlotte as their home airport, you could also PM them and direct them to the Community thread you open. It's a great way to get some energy behind it.

pretty much what SkiAdcock and SanDiego1K both said and don't be afraid to start one thinking nobody will show up as you can be very surprised-trust me, i did one for a visiting fellow f/'ter and it was just 6-7 of us but it was great (and besides, the word "beer" in a "do thread" will usually get some attention ;))

It's a good time of year to get some interest in hub-flying, with everyone jockying to make status. I'd come to Charlotte in a flash, go to a do, see my brother in law and his family and head back, but... I am way past making 1k this year.

Suffice to say, have a mini do in February and let me know about it ! :D

Stealthnc:
Welcome to Flyertalk. Other folks have already posted great advice. I'm in Clt & I know there are a few others. I'm all up for putting something together.

You might also put a note in the US Airways forum, given the airline's dominance in CLT, with a link to your post here in Community. I'm sure a number of CLT folks frequent the US forum that may not check in here in Community all that often. (Though chances are, coach knows 'em. :))

stealthnc,

After you post it, I would suggest adding a signature to your thread, linking it to your event.

Click on my link below. ;)

If you want help adding a signature, just ask.

Thanks all for the input! Yes, I'd love to know about signatures (tried to figure it out on my own but didn't see where I can set one up).

There's been a recent change that hasn't been well publicized. You can't add a signature line unless you have 90 days and 90 posts now. Of course, that doesn't stop anyone from including their message as the last line in the body of their post.

To be eligible to display a signature with each post, you must be a member of FlyerTalk for at least 90 days and have contributed 90 posts to the community.

My advice -

Pick one or two dates and stick with them. If you throw it open to "who can come when" you will be overwhelmed with who can and can't make every date under the sun.

And i echo others - if you post it, they will come!

I'm another CLTer. coach has wonderfully coordinated 2 meal dos that i've attended. I'm not a planner myself, but I'll attend anything if I'm in town.

Though I live well to the north, I still fly frequently out of CLT, though I have given up on US after years as Chairman's Preferred. I'd drive down for a DO if I'm at home in the Blue Ridge (as opposed to home in the Northwet).

I tried to get a couple of small gatherings going in Phoenix this year but had bad luck with them.

However, I managed to get one going thanks to a more well-known FTer attaching himself to the post and helping coordinate things. I don't want to name names without asking him but he knows who he is. Finding someone well versed in FT gatherings seems to really help.
