Years ago I never worried about going over limit...The card would cut you off, kill the transaction. I would pay with another card or cash. This $29 fee most cards have is a cheap shot. This has to do with making money from fees. The few times I have gone over...a phone call will get it off my bill.

It is your responsibility to know your credit card limit and you acknowledge that you didn't!
The ONLY mistake Citibank made was issuing someone so irresponsible a credit card in the first place. The reason they would not remove the over-the-limit charge is because YOU were at fault. |
In almost every case I have seen, the terms on your application clearly state that there will be an over-the-limit fee (usually $29, from experience). Simply put, you agreed to those terms. I agree with most folks here in that it was a courtesy on Citibank's part to let the charge go through. While abroad, I would rather be allowed to go over my limit than be stranded without any money. We all make mistakes, and $29 is a slap on the wrist, considering you went over about $1K. I've had to pay a late fee once, because I overlooked my bill. I paid, and didn't argue. (Speaking of which, if your payment is a day or two late, many issuers will remove the late-fee charge if it happens only once. I know- I've been there). No offense to you at all through the above comments, but I have been an overall happy customer of Citibank for many years. If you feel Citibank is not for you, then perhaps you made the right choice for going to a more compatible issuer. Good luck there.
