Is Citi's "Conversion" the same as "Product Change"?

In Citi's world, is "conversion" the same as "product change" and will my credit history transfer? It is not stated in their FAQs below. And, why will the credit card number change if it continues to be a Mastercard? The offer from Citi is to convert from Citi Simplicity to City Rewards Plus card. After reading the Citi information below, how sure are you that "conversion/convert is the same as Product Change? Thank you in advance.

"After you convert, your new card will arrive with a new account number. Please remember to notify those who regularly bill your account of the change.

What else is changing if I convert?
When you convert to the Citi Rewards+ Card, you will continue to pay no annual fee.**footnote ** However, for any new transactions after conversion, the no late fees and no penalty rate benefits under your current card will no longer be available and one or more of your APRs will increase after you convert.**footnote ** You also will no longer have access to Citi Easy Deals℠. Please ensure that the address on file with us is current, otherwise important documentation regarding this conversion request may get returned to us resulting in cancellation of conversion or closure of the account.

Convert your card today. Earn and redeem ThankYou® Points for the things you want most."

Does anyone know why in a Citi "conversion"? the account number changes? And how does this ensure that the credit history is maintained in the conversion?

I did a "conversion" many years ago when the Double Cash card first came out (from a Diamond Preferred). The account history is the same but I did indeed receive a brand-new number. However, you're best bet is to call and find out.

Ok, here's the trick. When I called Citi, I was told I could only change from Citi Simplicity to Citi Rewards Plus (the same as online), but when I was sent to retention they pretty much told me I could change to anything including the Double Cash. With Double Cash I could keep my credit card # but it would change for Rewards Plus (though my entire credit history would transfer in both cases). The drawback is that the extended 24 month warranty which is available with Simplicity (and Rewards Plus) is not available for Double Cash. So, now I am confused as to whether to make a change or not and, if so, to which card.

But it is great to know that asking for the "retention" Department at Citi, gives you a lot of options!

Where did you do a conversion online? And where did you find this FAQ? I just did a conversion over the phone but would love to be able to read the details online. Thanks.

The article is not true. I had my number changed, and still got the bonus before 24 months elapsed.
